Anze Kopitar, the esteemed captain of the Los Angeles Kings and a true franchise icon instrumental in securing two Stanley Cup titles in 2012 and 2014, officially announced his intention to retire following the conclusion of the 2025-26 NHL season. This declaration, made just after his 38th birthday, marks the end of what will be a remarkable 20-season career for the Slovenian star.
Having dedicated his entire professional career to the Kings, Kopitar is currently entering the final season of a two-year contract extension, which he signed in 2023. This agreement has further solidified his legacy as one of the most significant players in the team`s history. Renowned as a premier two-way center, particularly celebrated for his defensive acumen, Kopitar holds the Kings` all-time records for games played (1,454) and assists (838). He also stands on the cusp of another historic achievement, needing just 30 points to surpass Marcel Dionne`s 1,307 points and become the franchise`s leading scorer. Last season, Kopitar impressively ranked second on the Kings in both points (67) and ice time (18:57), while also tying for the team lead with seven game-winning goals.
The Kings selected Kopitar with the 11th overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut in 2006-07, earning national hero status in Slovenia as the first player from his country to compete in the league. Since then, he has remained a pivotal figure for the Kings organization, with his most profound impact evident during their Stanley Cup championship runs in 2012 and 2014. His exceptional skill and sportsmanlike conduct have garnered immense respect across the league, underscored by two Selke Trophies for the league`s best defensive forward (2016, 2018) and three Lady Byng Trophies for gentlemanly play, two of which were earned in 2023 and 2025.
