The much-anticipated final of the Volleyball World Championship is set, pitting Bulgaria against Italy for the coveted global title. Bulgaria seeks its first-ever championship, a dream they`ve pursued throughout their history, while Italy aims for its fifth, having already secured four.
With both teams guaranteed a medal after their semi-final victories over Czechia and Poland, the stakes are incredibly high. Bulgaria`s appearance in the final marks their first in 55 years, offering them a chance at a historic maiden title. Italy, meanwhile, could secure their fifth championship, bringing them closer to the Soviet Union`s record as the most decorated team.
Italy`s Road to the Final
Italy`s journey to the final has been anything but straightforward. After a challenging preliminary round that included a 2:3 loss to Belgium and a crucial must-win match against Ukraine, they finished second in their pool. This set them on a tougher path, which they navigated with remarkable skill. They swept Argentina 3:0 in the Round of 16, then exacted revenge on Belgium with another dominant straight-sets victory in the quarter-finals.
Their most impressive performance, however, came in the semi-finals against fierce rivals Poland. Italy showcased incredible resilience, coming from behind in all three sets to clinch a 3:0 victory and secure their second consecutive final appearance at the 2025 FIVB Men`s Volleyball World Championship.

Italy holds a significant head-to-head advantage, having won the last nine encounters against Bulgaria, dropping only eight of 35 sets. Their most recent victory was a 3:1 triumph in the 2025 FIVB Men`s Volleyball Nations League in June. Despite this dominance, only two of those nine wins were straight-set sweeps, suggesting Bulgaria might have a few surprises up their sleeve.

Bulgaria`s Undefeated Run
A key asset for Bulgaria is Aleksandar Nikolov, the tournament`s leading scorer, who boasts a remarkable 55-point lead over the next active player, Czechia`s Patrik Indra. Nikolov`s red-hot form was evident with his 31 points against Czechia. Neutralizing his offensive power will be crucial for Italy`s defense if they hope to secure an easier path to victory.
Bulgaria enters the final as the tournament`s sole undefeated team, having dropped only five sets across six matches. Their resilience has been thoroughly tested and proven in hard-fought 3:2 victories against Slovenia in the preliminary round and the USA in the quarter-finals.
