Coco Gauff was compelled to retire mid-match at Indian Wells, marking only the second such instance in her career. She withdrew from her match against Alexandra Eala due to an apparent left arm injury, ending her participation in this year’s tournament.
Despite entering the match following a strong opening-round victory, Gauff appeared uncharacteristically hampered. She struggled significantly with her serve, failing to hold it even once throughout the contest.
Coco Gauff Explains Injury Leading to Retirement
Speculation about Gauff’s condition was confirmed when she took a medical timeout for a left arm issue towards the end of the first set. Post-match, Gauff revealed the injury began bothering her as early as the second game.
Gauff shared insights into her condition: “We’re going to figure out what it is tomorrow, but based off the feeling, being told that it’s probably something nerve-related. Never had anything like this before, never felt anything, a sensation like this before. And then as the match played, it got progressively worse, even when I wasn’t using my arm on shots that I wasn’t even using my left arm for.”
Ultimately, the discomfort became too severe for Gauff. Trailing by a set and a break, she made the difficult decision to retire, having attempted to continue playing through the pain out of respect for her opponent and friend, Eala.
Eala Displays Composure in Emotional Victory
Despite the unusual circumstances, Alexandra Eala, who had recently suffered a significant defeat against Gauff in Dubai, showcased remarkable composure and skill throughout the emotionally charged match. Following the abrupt conclusion, Eala expressed admiration for Gauff, acknowledging her as a role model on the tour.
Eala stated, “I want to say thank you to all the incredible women who have paved the way and who have advocated for themselves and for other women. Among them is Coco. So thank you Coco for being an amazing competitor and amazing role model. I really hope everything is well and you will recover soon.”
Off the court, Gauff and Eala share a close friendship and have even partnered in doubles, reaching the quarterfinals of last year’s Italian Open in Rome. Moving forward, their immediate priorities diverge. Gauff’s focus will be on diagnosing and treating her injury ahead of the Miami Open. Conversely, Eala continues her impressive debut performance at Indian Wells, preparing to face Linda Noskova in the fourth round.
