Malå, a small inland village located about 800 km north of Sweden`s capital, Stockholm, is once again preparing to host the COOP SnowVolley Cup. The event will take place at the Tjamstan alpine resort, building on the success of last year`s tournament. As the days lengthen and winter conditions become more enjoyable, Malå IF is set to deliver a snow volleyball spectacle across four courts. Plans are underway to enhance the event area, aiming for a more functional and welcoming experience for spectators.
The tournament has expanded this year to include three distinct categories: mixed, senior/corporate/youth, and a mixed snow-level specifically designed for younger participants. Approximately 20 teams from various parts of northern Sweden are expected to compete, playing under rules adapted to the tournament`s format. The youth snow-level category, for kids aged 10-12, draws inspiration from the Swedish Volleyball Federation`s structured game system. In this snow adaptation, teams are required to make three touches, but uniquely, players are permitted to catch and throw the ball on their second touch.
The concept for organizing this snow volleyball tournament was first explored over four years ago. Initial enthusiasm from local players and leaders was high, but the plans were put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic. The idea was revived last year with the involvement of leader Johan Grensell, bringing the original vision back to life. This revival has been strongly supported by local sponsors, the community, the Swedish Volleyball Federation, various sports federations, and the CEV. Malå IF organizes the tournament with the purpose of promoting the sport, generating funds for children and youth activities, and revitalizing the community. The event sees significant engagement from numerous individuals and local organizations. The COOP SnowVolley Cup 2024 is brought to life by volunteers from Malå IF, in partnership with COOP Malå and the Tjamstan alpine resort.
The primary objective for this year`s event is to improve upon the inaugural run in 2023 and to contribute to the further development of the club in the years ahead.
