Malå, a picturesque inland village situated approximately 800 km north of Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, is once again gearing up to host the highly anticipated COOP SnowVolley Cup. As the days grow longer and the crisp winter air becomes increasingly enjoyable, the Tjamstan alpine resort is prepared to build upon last year’s triumph. This year’s event promises an even more functional and inviting arena for spectators, featuring an impressive setup of four courts to accommodate the exciting snow volleyball action.

The tournament has seen significant expansion, now offering three distinct categories to engage a broader spectrum of participants: mixed, senior/corporate/youth, and mixed snow-level. Around 20 teams from various parts of northern Sweden are expected to converge and compete. The rules have been thoughtfully adapted to suit each format, with particular attention given to the youth snow-level event for children aged 10-12. Drawing inspiration from the Swedish Volleyball Federation’s seven-level game system, this unique version requires players to make three touches per team, but innovatively permits catching and throwing the ball on the second touch, ensuring an accessible and fun experience for young athletes.
The concept of organizing a Snow Volleyball tournament in Malå was first discussed over four years ago, sparking considerable enthusiasm among local players and leaders. However, these initial plans were put on hold due to the global coronavirus pandemic. Last year, Johan Grensell took the lead in reviving these original ambitions, securing crucial support from local sponsors, the community, the Swedish Volleyball Federation, other sports federations, and the CEV. The COOP SnowVolley Cup 2024 is proudly organized by Malå IF volunteers, in close partnership with COOP Malå and the Tjamstan alpine resort. This initiative aims not only to promote the sport but also to fund children and youth activities, thereby bringing vitality to the local community.
Following a successful debut in 2023, the organizers are dedicated to surpassing last year’s achievements, with a clear vision for the long-term development of the club and the enduring growth of Snow Volleyball in the region for years to come.
