With a powerful roster that includes four Olympians, the Netherlands launched their campaign at the 2025 CEV Beach Volley Nations Cup Finals in Espinho with an outstanding performance, securing four comprehensive victories on Thursday.

Sharing the spotlight with the Dutch, Norway also maintained an undefeated record at Praia da Baía, as their teams triumphed in both of their initial encounters. The pool play stage is scheduled to conclude on Friday in Portugal, paving the way for the high-stakes elimination rounds over the weekend. Quarterfinals are set for Saturday, with the semifinals and the much-anticipated gold medal match slated for Sunday.
Introduced to the European beach volleyball calendar in 2022, the Beach Nations Cup is an innovative `country versus country` competition that mirrors the format and excitement of tennis`s Davis Cup.
Pool A Dominance and Key Battles
Pool A saw four duels completed on Thursday, and the Netherlands stood out as the only nation to remain unbeaten. In their first challenge against Lithuania, Alexander Brouwer and Steven van de Velde overcame Robert Juchnevic and Artur Vasiljev in a hard-fought 2-1 (25-27, 21-10, 17-15) contest. Following this, Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot delivered a commanding straight-sets victory (21-17, 21-15) against Arnas Rumsevicius and Karolis Palubinskas.
Just a few hours later, the Dutch extended their flawless run against Spain, once again securing wins without dropping a single set. Brouwer and van de Velde defeated Álvaro Vieira and Antonio Saucedo 2-0 (21-12, 25-23), while Boermans and de Groot also triumphed over Alejandro Huerta and Javier Huerta in two sets (21-14, 23-21).
Before their clash with the Netherlands, the Spanish team recorded a significant victory in Espinho by defeating the reigning champions, France. Vieira and Saucedo earned Spain`s initial win, besting Kéran Duval and Calvin Aye in straight sets (21-18, 27-25). The Huerta brothers then followed up with a decisive tie-breaker win (21-19, 17-21, 16-14) against Téo Rotar and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat.

Later in Pool A, France and Lithuania split their matches. Robert Juchnevic and Artur Vasiljev gave Lithuania the advantage with a 2-0 victory (21-19, 21-15) over Duval and Aye. However, Rotar and Gauthier-Rat mounted a comeback for France, securing a 2-0 win (21-12, 21-14) against Rumsevicius and Palubinskas.
Pool B Action: Norway`s Perfect Start
In Pool B, only two duels were held on Thursday, with Norway concluding the day as the sole undefeated nation after overcoming Austria. The `Beach Volley Vikings` pair Hendrik Mol and Mathias Berntsen secured a 2-1 victory (19-21, 21-18, 15-10) against Julian Hörl and Philipp Waller in the first match. Following this, the formidable duo of Anders Mol and Christian Sørum swept aside Tim Berger and Timo Hammarberg with a dominant straight-sets win (21-12, 21-14).
The other Pool B encounter concluded with a split of victories between host nation Portugal and Denmark. The Danish pair Nicolai Hovmann and Christian Andersen celebrated first, defeating brothers Gonçalo and Tomas Sousa in straight sets (21-10, 21-16). However, Hugo Campos and João Pedrosa leveled the score for the home team, overcoming Mads Møllgaard and Kristoffer Abell in a decisive tie-breaker (17-21, 21-11, 15-9).
