Iran secured their spot in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Men’s Volleyball World Championship with a hard-fought 3-2 victory against the host nation, the Philippines. In a nail-biting tie-break, the Philippines squandered six match points, including a 20-18 lead, allowing Iran to stage a dramatic comeback sealed by a crucial block from 22-year-old Yousef Kazemi Poshtpari.

Statistically, Iran narrowly led in attacks (63-62) and aces (6-5). Poriya Khanzadeh and Ali Hajipour each contributed 22 points for Iran, a tally matched by Philippines’ captain Bryan Bagunas. Finland secured the second qualification spot from Pool C with a 2-1 record, earning a matchup against Belgium in the next stage.

Argentina`s 3-2 victory was largely attributed to their formidable defense, boasting an 11-5 advantage in kill blocks and committing fewer errors than France. Luciano Vicentin spearheaded Argentina`s attack with 22 points, supported by Luciano Palonsky (17) and Agustin Loser (12).

Despite France leading in attacks (71-62) and aces (3-2), it wasn`t enough to secure their advancement. Trevor Clevenot registered 16 points, Theo Faure added 13, while Barthelemy Chinenyeze and Nicolas Le Goff each tallied 11.

Finland 3 – 1 Korea (25–18, 25–23, 17–25, 25–21)

Finland concluded the group stage in second place in Pool C after a solid 3-1 win over Korea.

The Finns demonstrated superiority in attack (62-54) and blocks (10-9) but conceded more aces (4-5) and committed more errors (19-16) than their Korean counterparts.

Luka Marttila proved highly effective for Finland with 25 points (22 attacks, 3 blocks), while Joonas Jokela contributed 21 points (19 attacks, 2 aces, 2 blocks).

For Korea, Shin Hojin led with 24 points (22 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace), and Jeong Hanyong added 16 points (13 spikes, 2 blocks, 1 ace).

Despite a brief four-point deficit in the first set, Belgium quickly asserted control, securing a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Defending World Cup champions Italy advanced to the playoffs by defeating Ukraine 3-0, finishing second in Pool F with two wins and one loss, accumulating seven points.

Alessandro Michieletto was a standout performer for Italy with 13 points, while Mattia Bottolo and Yuri Romano each contributed 11 points.

Yuri Semeniuk led the Ukrainian effort with 14 points (11 spikes, 3 blocks), and Ilya Kovalov added 12 attack points. Ukraine’s high error count (24 compared to Italy’s 13) proved to be a critical factor in their loss. Italy also held advantages in blocks (6-3) and aces (4-3).

Italy is now set to meet Argentina in the Round of 16, while Belgium will face Finland. Both highly anticipated matches are scheduled for Sunday.

Czechia 3 – 0 China (26–24, 25–19, 25–18)

For China, outside hitter Wang Bin contributed 11 spikes and 1 ace.

Statistically, Czechia outperformed China across all key metrics: attacks (47-39), blocks (10-4), and aces (4-3).

With this outcome, Czechia advances to the Round of 16, while Brazil, despite two victories, finished third in the pool and faced a shocking early exit.

Another major upset on the final day saw Serbia defeat Brazil 3-0, effectively knocking the South American giants out of contention for the knockout stage. This marked Serbia`s second consecutive victory, securing them first place in Pool H with six points, while Brazil finished third with two wins and one loss.

Serbia demonstrated superior performance across all statistical categories:

  • Attacks: 43 to 40
  • Blocks: 10 to 6
  • Aces: 4 to 2
  • Opponent errors: 18 to 16

Drazen Luburic was pivotal in Serbia`s win, leading the attack with 19 points (17 kills, 2 aces). Outside hitter Pavle Peric also made significant contributions, scoring 15 points (13 kills, 1 block, 1 ace).

Brazil`s top scorer was Alan de Souza with 10 points (9 kills, 1 block).

Round of 16: European Dominance Confirmed

In total, 11 European teams have successfully qualified for the Round of 16: Türkiye, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Belgium, Finland, Bulgaria, Portugal, Slovenia, Czechia, and Serbia. The highly anticipated knockout stage is set to commence on Saturday, September 20.
