The 2025 FIVB Men`s Volleyball World Championship marks a significant moment: for the first time since the current format was adopted in 1978, all four semifinalists are European nations. This mirrors earlier periods (1949-1966) when European teams consistently dominated the top four positions. With Italy, Poland, Czechia, and Bulgaria advancing to the semifinals in the Philippines, a European team is guaranteed to win the title, ensuring the final will also be an all-European affair.
This outcome is not merely coincidental; it powerfully underscores the sustained strength and consistency of European volleyball on the global stage. Regardless of the eventual champion, the trophy is now certain to remain within Europe.
Czechia`s Breakthrough Against Iran
Czechia commenced the day by securing a 3-1 victory against Iran (22-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-21). This remarkable achievement marks their first World Championship semifinal appearance as an independent nation since Czechoslovakia`s dissolution.
Iran began with strong momentum, quickly establishing a lead in the first set, which Ali Hajipour sealed with a back-row attack. The second set proved pivotal. Iran had the first set point, but Czechia maintained composure. Marek Sotola`s ace leveled the score, and Lukáš Vašina followed with another ace to snatch the set 27-25. From that point, Czechia seized control, winning the third set 25-20 and clinching the match in the fourth, courtesy of a winning point by Jan Galabov.
Patrik Indra, playing opposite, was Czechia`s top scorer with 22 points, boasting a 69% success rate, while Vašina contributed 21 points. For Iran, 21-year-old Poriya Khanzadeh and Hajipour each registered 18 points, but their efforts ultimately fell short against Czechia`s determined comeback.

Bulgaria`s Epic Comeback Against USA
Subsequently, Bulgaria staged one of the tournament`s most astonishing comebacks, rallying from a two-set deficit to overcome the United States 3-2 (21-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-13).
The USA initially appeared dominant, leveraging powerful serves and robust defense to win the first two sets. Bulgaria`s resurgence began in the third set, spearheaded by Iliya Petkov`s commanding performance in the middle, featuring swift attacks and aces. As Bulgaria won the third set 25-17, the momentum decisively shifted.
The fourth set remained tightly contested, with both teams exchanging points. However, at 24-22, Asparuh Asparuhov delivered a crucial kill block, forcing the match into a decisive tie-break.
During the tie-break, Aleksandar Nikolov initiated Bulgaria`s scoring with their first four points, with his younger brother Simeon adding two more. This early advantage provided a vital buffer. Although the USA managed to save three match points, Petkov ultimately sealed Bulgaria`s incredible comeback with the decisive spike.
Aleksandar Nikolov delivered an exceptional performance, scoring 29 points, supported by Asparuhov`s 12 and Petkov`s 10 points. For the USA, their initial strong start dissipated as Bulgaria`s confidence surged, preventing them from relinquishing their grip on the match.
