The second day of the Men`s Volleyball World Championship, hosted in the Philippines, delivered an exhilarating spectacle of intense competition. From the very outset, fans were treated to thrilling encounters, highlighted by a historic moment when the Bulgarian national team pushed a single set to an astounding 40 points, establishing a new tournament record not witnessed since 2006.

Pool B
Netherlands – Qatar 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 26-28, 25-23)
Poland – Romania 3-0 (34-32, 25-15, 25-19)
World number one Poland commenced their World Championship journey with a decisive 3-0 victory against Romania, despite facing a challenging opening set. After an initial struggle, Poland quickly asserted dominance in the subsequent two sets.
Captain Bartosz Kurek, back in action after missing the 2025 VNL, contributed 13 points (10 attacks, 2 blocks, 1 ace). Wilfredo Leon was instrumental with 14 points (11 attacks, 2 aces, 1 block), and Tomasz Fornal added 10 points (6 attacks, 3 blocks, 1 ace).
Romania`s offense was spearheaded by Adrian Aciobăniței with 11 points (9 attacks, 1 block, 1 ace), while Mircea Peța contributed 8 attacks and one block.
Poland demonstrated superiority across all key statistical categories:
- Attacks: 40–36
- Blocks: 9–3
- Aces: 6–2
- Fewer errors: 25 vs. 29
This strong performance propelled Poland to the top of Pool B, sharing the 3-point lead with the Netherlands but holding a superior set ratio.

Pool D
Cuba – Portugal 1-3 (25-20, 22-25, 19-25, 19-25)
USA – Colombia 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-14)
The USA team, under the leadership of captain Micah Christenson, kicked off their World Championship campaign with a commanding 3-0 sweep against Colombia in Pool D. Christenson, making his return after sitting out the Volleyball Nations League, showcased excellent synergy with his attackers.
Key players for the USA included:
- Ethan Champlin – 17 points (12 kills, 3 aces, 2 blocks)
- Gabriel Garcia – 12 points (8 kills, 4 aces)
- Jordan Ewert – 11 points (10 kills, 1 block)
For Colombia:
- Miguel Ángel Amaranto was the primary scorer with 11 kills
- Juan Felipe Benavides added 8 points all from attack swings
The USA`s dominance was reflected in the statistics: they outscored Colombia in kills (40‑31), blocks (6‑4), and aces (8‑3), while also committing fewer errors (17‑21). This victory secured 3 points for the USA in Pool D, leaving debutants Colombia without any points.

Pool E
Slovenia – Chile 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-16)
Sixth-ranked Slovenia initiated their 2025 Men`s World Championship bid with a decisive 3-0 victory (25‑19, 25‑20, 25‑16) against Chile in Pasay City. Their superior experience allowed them to maintain control throughout the match.
Slovenia`s leading scorers included Tonček Štern with 15 points (11 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces), Nik Mujanović (playing as an outside hitter) with 12 points (9 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace), and Jan Kozamernik contributing 11 points (7 kills, 4 blocks).
For Chile, Vicente Parraguirre was a standout, accumulating all 12 of his points through offense, while Noé Aravena added 11 points (7 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace).
In the statistical comparison, Slovenia outperformed Chile significantly in kills (47 vs. 30), blocks (10 vs. 5), and aces (5 vs. 1), though they committed slightly more errors (19 vs. 13). This win secured 3 points for Slovenia, placing them at the top of Pool E alongside Bulgaria, both with maximum points after the first round.

Germany – Bulgaria 0-3 (38-40, 22-25, 20-25)
Bulgaria launched their World Championship campaign with a remarkable straight-sets victory, 3-0, over Germany. The opening set proved to be a nail-biter; Germany clawed back from a six-point deficit, forcing overtime and holding multiple set points, but Bulgaria ultimately prevailed in a record-breaking 40-38 finish. Capitalizing on this momentum and committing fewer errors, Bulgaria maintained greater control to close out the subsequent sets and the match.
The Nikolov brothers delivered exceptional performances: 21-year-old outside hitter Aleksandar Nikolov led all scorers with an impressive 27 points (including two blocks and an ace), while 18-year-old Simeon Nikolov contributed nine points, including two aces, and boasted an 88% attack success rate. Fellow outside hitter Martin Atanasov also added 11 points and two blocks.
For Germany, 40-year-old captain and opposite György Grozer was their top performer with 13 points (three aces and three blocks), supported by Anton Brehme (11 points) and Tobias Krick (10 points).
Overall statistics showed Bulgaria with a strong offensive advantage of 53 kill points to Germany’s 43, and a block kill lead of 10-6. Germany edged out Bulgaria slightly in aces (6-4) and made fewer errors (23 vs. 25).

Pool G
Canada – Libya 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-12, 29-27)
Japan – Türkiye 0-3 (19-25, 23-25, 19-25)
In a significant upset, Türkiye secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Japan in their Pool G opener. Ranked #16 globally, Türkiye defeated the world #5 team—marking their first triumph against Japan since 2016.
Key to Türkiye`s success were:
- Efe Mandiraci, who delivered five aces—including the match-clinching point in the third set—and two kill blocks, accumulating a match-high 17 points.
- Adis Lagumdzija also made a crucial impact with 15 points, featuring three kill blocks and an ace, sealing the match with the final point.
Japan`s efforts were led by:
- Kento Miyaura, who scored 13 points (including one ace and one kill block).
- Captain Yuki Ishikawa, who added 10 points, all from attacks.
Statistically, Türkiye demonstrated superior performance in several counts:
- Aces: 7‑1
- Kill blocks: 8‑6
- Spike kills: 37‑33
They also maintained a cleaner game, committing 21 unforced errors compared to Japan`s 23.
