Men`s Tournament: France Falls in the Final
Easter Sunday commenced with the men`s quarterfinals and women`s semi-finals. A standout match in the quarterfinals was the clash between Poland and Italy 10. After dropping the first set 10-15, the Polish team mounted a strong recovery, winning the subsequent sets 19-17 and 15-13. Elsewhere, Italy 2 secured a comfortable victory against Uruguay, and France easily defeated Switzerland. In a keenly anticipated local derby, Italy 1 triumphed over Italy 6.
The formidable Italian trio of Berger, Burgmann, and Seeber, current champions, saw their journey halted in the semi-finals by the resilient Polish squad. Shortly after, Italy 2, represented by Di Risio, Camozzi, and Geromin, were bested by a consistently strong and cohesive French team. In the battle for the bronze medal, Italy 1 emerged victorious against Italy 2.
In the Men`s Gold final, France initially took a 9-6 lead in the first set. However, Piotr Groszek spearheaded a remarkable Polish comeback, ultimately securing the decisive point for a 15-12 set win. The second set saw France again start strong, leading 7-4, but Poland demonstrated incredible teamwork and resilience to once more reverse the deficit. A crucial error from the French team handed Poland the `golden point` and the championship.
Women`s Tournament: Italy Secures Victory Against Resilient Turkey
The reigning Italian champions, Breidenbach, Arcaini, and Dalmazzo, smoothly advanced to the final by defeating Hungary 2 with scores of 15-8 and 15-9 in their semi-final match, with both Breidenbach and Dalmazzo contributing 9 points. In the other semi-final, the Turkish team of Yalcin, Celebi, Sencel, and Sahin overcame the Czech Republic in two sets. Despite a strong start from the Czech women, who led 6-3, Turkey`s collective and individual strength eventually shone through.
In the women`s final, Turkey started strong, quickly establishing a 4-0 lead with Sencel`s impressive play, extending it to 13-9. However, Breidenbach rallied Italy with crucial blocks and aces, although Yalcin ultimately secured the first set for Turkey with a 15-12 score. The second set`s momentum shifted in Italy`s favor, largely due to two pivotal aces from Arcaini. Turkey committed several unforced errors, even after a substitution. Another powerful serve from Sofia (15-6) leveled the match at 1-1. With their rhythm and consistency regained, and Dalmazzo performing exceptionally, Italy powered through to secure the final victory, winning the decisive third set.
