As the preliminary round of the 2025 FIVB Men`s Volleyball Nations League concluded, four formidable European teams remain in contention for the coveted title. The highly anticipated final round is set to electrify fans in Ningbo, People’s Republic of China, from July 30 to August 3.
The top seven teams from the preliminary standings successfully secured their spots in this elite final phase, joined by host nation China, despite their 17th-place finish overall. China advanced automatically as hosts, having recorded three wins and nine losses across their 12 matches in the preliminary stage. Brazil emerged from the preliminary round with an exceptional record, boasting 11 victories out of 12 matches and dropping only 11 sets, a testament to the highly competitive and well-balanced nature of this year`s tournament.
Reigning champions France and Italy also delivered strong performances in the preliminary round. Italy secured 10 wins in 12 matches and enters Ningbo on a red-hot five-match winning streak, with their only recent setback coming against Brazil in a tight 1:2 encounter. France, a powerful contender, recorded eight wins in their 12 matches.
Italy is strategically poised to face Cuba in the quarter-finals, a team they have not yet encountered in this edition of the Nations League. Cuba enters the final stage with an even record of six wins and six losses, mirroring the performance of European newcomers Ukraine and Bulgaria, but holding a slight point advantage over them.
A thrilling European semi-final clash is guaranteed on one side of the bracket. Should Italy successfully overcome Cuba, they will face the formidable victor of the high-stakes battle between France and Slovenia, a truly anticipated `titans battle`. These two European powerhouses have a recent history of intense encounters, having met four times in the past two years, with Slovenia holding a 3-1 advantage in these matchups. However, France claimed a decisive 3-0 (25:23; 29:27; 25:23) victory in their most recent preliminary round encounter in this tournament, signaling their current form.

Poland, a consistent medal contender and a powerhouse in men`s volleyball, is the fourth European team to reach the quarter-finals. With an impressive record of five medals in the competition`s history, including the coveted title in 2023, Poland finished fifth in the standings. They recorded eight wins and four losses in the preliminary round, an identical record to Japan, though with a slightly lower set ratio.
The first two quarter-final matches, featuring Brazil vs. China and Japan vs. Poland, are scheduled for July 30. The remaining two quarter-finals will take place on July 31. The highly anticipated semi-final matches are set for August 2, with the medal matches, including the grand final to crown the champion, culminating on August 3.
