SC Freiburg, representing the Bundesliga in the Europa League, has secured their place in the 2025/26 UEL quarterfinals following a dominant 5-1 home victory against KRC Genk. After a disappointing 0-1 loss in the away leg last week, Julian Schuster’s squad faced a deficit, but this was emphatically erased by Bundesliga icon Vincenzo Grifo, who made history by becoming Freiburg’s all-time leading goal scorer at a crucial moment.

Vincenzo Grifo Ignites the Comeback

Wearing the captain’s armband in the absence of regular skipper Christian Günter, Freiburg’s record-breaking “club man” wasted no time in putting the German hosts ahead. Displaying his renowned set-piece mastery, Grifo delivered a pinpoint free-kick cross in the 19th minute, which Matthias Ginter skillfully converted to give Freiburg a 1-0 lead. Genk nearly found an immediate reply just a minute later, but SCF goalkeeper Noah Atubolu made a crucial save to deny the equalizer.

Matthias Ginter Orchestrates the Second

Matthias Ginter, who previously earned accolades for his performance, was once again a pivotal figure before the home crowd. His aggressive and well-timed tackles in the early stages garnered significant applause from the Europa Park ultras. In the 25th minute, Ginter quickly regained possession after a teammate’s error. The ball cycled back to him via Maximilian Eggestein and Yuito Suzuki. Ginter then headed a deflected shot from Suzuki towards Igor Matanovic, who completed a somewhat unconventional but well-deserved goal, extending Freiburg’s lead to 2-0.

Genk Briefly Narrows the Aggregate Gap

Suzuki almost put the Breisgauer hosts up 3-0 in the 38th minute but couldn’t quite adjust his body to direct his shot effectively as he fell. A minute later, the Belgian visitors unexpectedly pulled a goal back. Freiburg’s defense seemed to switch off, allowing teenage Greek attacker Konstantinos Karetsas to strike the post. Karetsas swiftly followed up on his own rebound, cleverly cutting the ball back for Matte Smets to slot home, making it 2-1. Schuster’s side appeared momentarily unsettled but managed to prevent further goals before halftime.

Grifo Achieves Historic Milestone

The goal that firmly put Freiburg back on track for European advancement came, fittingly, from the “club man” himself. Vincenzo Grifo’s 106th goal across all competitions for Freiburg arrived at the most opportune time. Remarkably, Grifo didn’t have to exert much effort for this historic strike. A series of unfortunate defensive errors led to Smets directly passing the ball to Grifo in front of an empty net. The 32-year-old gratefully accepted the gift, restoring his beloved Schwarzwaldverein’s one-goal aggregate lead.

Yuito Suzuki Seals the Victory

Shortly after Grifo’s momentous milestone, little stood between Freiburg and a place in the Europa League quarterfinals. Yuito Suzuki showcased immense composure when receiving a pass from Johan Manzambi inside the penalty area. Despite being tightly marked by two Genk defenders, the Japanese international calmly slotted home a beautiful finish, more than making up for his earlier awkward miss. The Belgian visitors, visibly deflated, offered little resistance after Suzuki’s decisive goal.

Suzuki later added an assist on Maximilian Eggestein’s goal, which made it 5-1 with ten minutes remaining.

Freiburg Player Ratings

Noah Atubolu (8) – Jordy Makengo (5), Bruno Ogbus (7), Matthias Ginter (8), Philipp Treu (4) – Johan Manzambi (6), Maximilian Eggestein (7) – Vincenzo Grifo (9), Yuito Suzuki (8), Jan-Niklas Beste (4) – Igor Matanovic (6)

Substitutes: Lucas Höler (4), Patrick Osterhage (5), Derry Scherhant (6), Philipp Lienhart (-), Lukas Kübler (-)

Player of the Match: Vincenzo Grifo (9)

Despite stellar performances from several teammates, Vincenzo Grifo undoubtedly earns the Player of the Match award. Grifo immediately instilled confidence in his team with his early assist and then propelled the Bundesliga representatives forward by restoring the aggregate lead at precisely the right moment. Defender Ginter, attacker Suzuki, and even goalkeeper Atubolu all made equally vital contributions, earning well-deserved marks of (8).

Statistically, Grifo had only 46 touches, suggesting he wasn’t continuously involved in the game. However, it’s highly unlikely that anyone in the roaring Europa Park Stadion, or indeed the author, cared about such statistics. While acknowledging the crucial efforts of other performers and awarding (7) to Eggestein and Bruno Ogbus, this night was unequivocally a celebration of one of the Bundesliga’s all-time greats!
