Preview Germany and Ukraine to Play for Gold on Sunday

Germany and Ukraine are set to clash for the women`s title at the fourth edition of the 2025 CEV Beach Volley Nations Cup Finals, following their impressive victories in Saturday`s semifinals in Espinho.

Ukrainian beach volleyball team during semifinals

Ukraine secured their spot in the final by eliminating defending champions the Netherlands with a pair of decisive sweeps in the semifinals.

Both Germany and Ukraine navigated the semifinal stage held at Praia da Baía successfully. Germany overcame Spain in a hard-fought contest, while Ukraine delivered a dominant performance against the reigning champions from the Netherlands. The gold medal series on Sunday is scheduled to commence with matches at 14:30 and 15:30 local time, with a potential `golden set` deciding the outcome if the series is tied.

This final brings together two nations with contrasting profiles in European beach volleyball. Germany has long been a dominant force in the region, boasting an impressive record of nine EuroBeachVolley titles with their women’s teams. In contrast, Ukraine is emerging as a formidable presence on the continent, and Sunday presents an opportunity for them to achieve their first major success at this elite level.

Germany`s Challenging Road to the Final

As the winners of Pool A in Espinho, Germany faced Spain for a coveted spot in the final series, requiring tie-breakers to secure both their wins. Sandra Ittlinger and Anna-Lena Grüne kicked off the proceedings, staging a comeback to defeat Sofía González and Ana Vergara 2-1 (17-21, 21-18, 15-8).

The second decisive encounter featured teams that participated in last year’s Paris Olympics. Reigning EuroBeachVolley champions Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann showcased their prowess by topping Daniela Álvarez and Tania Moreno in another three-set thriller (17-21, 22-20, 15-13), thereby confirming Germany`s advancement.

Ukraine`s Decisive Semifinal Performance

Ukraine, having clinched the top spot in Pool B in Portugal, enjoyed a more straightforward path to the final against the Netherlands, sweeping the defending champions in two matches. Valentyna Davidova and Anhelina Khmil secured the first victory, expertly handling Mila Konink and Raïsa Schoon in straight sets (21-15, 21-18).

The second match also favored Ukraine, with Maryna Hladun and Tetiana Lazarenko needing just two sets (21-19, 21-13) to overcome Emi van Driel and Wies Bekhuis, solidifying Ukraine`s place in the championship match.

Final Match Schedule

The championship series on Sunday will commence with the matchup between Ittlinger/Grüne and Davidova/Khmil at 14:30. An hour later, at 15:30, Müller/Tillmann will face Hladun/Lazarenko in the second match of the final.
