In a truly monumental moment for French volleyball, the national team has qualified for the quarterfinals of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship for the first time in over 70 years. This historic feat was achieved by defeating two-time champions China in a compelling Round of 16 encounter.
Captain Helena Cazaute led her team with an impressive 22 points, attributing the significant win to the squad’s unwavering spirit and determination. France had previously hinted at their potential in the tournament with 3-1 victories over Puerto Rico and Greece, and a hard-fought five-set match against Brazil. Against China, powerful contributions came from opposite spiker Iman Ndiaye, who added 20 points, and Amelie Rotar, who scored 18.
Head coach Cesar Hernandez lauded his team`s exceptional blocking and defense, emphasizing that belief and bravery were the critical factors in their success. France`s last appearance in the World Championship quarterfinals dates back to 1952. This time, however, they are not merely participants but serious contenders operating at the highest level. Hernandez expressed his optimism, hoping this achievement marks just the beginning for the French team.
“It was an incredible effort. The team believed in themselves, showed immense bravery, and executed our game plan perfectly, especially in blocking and defense. This is a special moment for French volleyball, and we aim to go even further.”
