Holger Rune is slated to make his return to the tennis tour at the Hamburg Open in May. This eagerly anticipated comeback has been confirmed through official tournament announcements and social media updates from the player himself.
The former top-10 player has been absent from the circuit since October of last year, having suffered a rupture of his left Achilles tendon. He now has a specific date and tournament earmarked for his return to competitive play.
Rune’s Comeback Timeline
Injury Interrupted Momentum
Last year, Rune was actively pursuing qualification for the Nitto ATP Finals. During a match against Ugo Humbert at the indoor Stockholm Open, with Rune leading a set, an unfortunate incident occurred.
The Danish player felt a sudden pop near his left ankle at the beginning of the second set, forcing him to retire from the match. Subsequent medical evaluations confirmed his fears: Rune had torn his Achilles tendon, an injury typically necessitating a prolonged rehabilitation period.
Rehabilitation Ahead of Schedule
Rune commenced his rehabilitation process almost immediately after the injury, undergoing surgery and subsequently spending a significant portion of his recovery at the advanced Aspetar facility in Doha, Qatar.
The former World No. 4’s recovery has progressed exceptionally well, with Rune now ready to compete again just over seven months after the initial injury. This represents a notably swift return, given that Achilles tendon injuries typically require 9 to 12 months for a full recovery.
French Open Decision Pending
It remains uncertain whether Rune will participate in the French Open following his return in Hamburg, or if he will choose to forgo the Grand Slam due to the physically demanding best-of-five-set format.
Regardless of his immediate tournament schedule, Rune now has a defined path for his comeback as he embarks on his journey to climb back up the rankings and realize the considerable potential he has demonstrated since his junior career.
