UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev recently weighed in on the striking abilities of current featherweight champion Ilia Topuria and former two-division champion Conor McGregor.
When asked to compare the two elite fighters, Makhachev highlighted their distinct strengths, focusing on the difference between raw aggression and technical defense.
“In terms of pure striking skills, I find it difficult to compare them directly. If we focus on aggressive attacking power, Topuria might have the edge,” Makhachev explained.
“However, as a counterpuncher, I believe McGregor was superior. His timing was exceptional. I am a southpaw myself, and the way he countered with his left hand, often utilizing slips—that was truly next level. His ability to wait for the perfect moment was unmatched.”
Makhachev’s analysis suggests that while Topuria possesses greater offensive capability, McGregor’s technical mastery in reacting to opponents places him higher in the realm of defensive striking and timing.
