The thrilling final phase of the Women`s World Championship is currently underway in Bangkok, Thailand. On August 30, two intense Round of 16 encounters saw European volleyball powerhouses Italy and Poland emerge victorious, thereby securing their places in the much-anticipated quarterfinals.
Italy Dominates Germany with Stellar Performance
Italy – Germany 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-11)

The world`s number one ranked team and reigning Olympic champions, Italy, showcased a commanding performance against Germany in their Round of 16 match. They secured a decisive straight-sets victory, paving their way to the next stage of the tournament. Italian star opposite Paola Egonu was instrumental in their success, leading all scorers with an impressive 21 points. Her contribution accounted for a third of Italy’s 48 attack points, complemented by four kill blocks and a single ace.
This triumphant win, with set scores of 25-22, 25-18, and 25-11, extended Italy’s extraordinary winning streak to 33 consecutive official matches. This remarkable run commenced in June 2024 and includes their Olympic gold medal triumph at Paris 2024, alongside two consecutive Volleyball Nations League titles.
Further pivotal contributions came from 21-year-old outside hitter Stella Nervini, who added 11 points including one block, and middle blocker Sarah Fahr, who finished with 10 points. Fahr`s points were predominantly from nine powerful attacks and one service ace. She also delivered the match-winning point with a quick attack and demonstrated an outstanding 82% success rate in attack.
Germany struggled to keep pace, falling behind in all critical performance categories with 30 successful attacks, five kill blocks, and no aces. Although both teams committed 16 unforced errors, Italy`s offensive superiority was evident. Outside hitter Lina Alsmeier was the only German player to reach double figures, scoring 10 points, all from attacks.
Poland Edges Out Belgium in Five-Set Thriller
Poland – Belgium 3-2 (25:27, 25:20, 25:17, 22:25, 15:10)

Poland fought hard to secure their quarterfinal berth after a grueling five-set victory against Belgium, with scores of 25-27, 25-20, 25-17, 22-25, and 15-10. This hard-earned triumph sets up an exciting clash against Italy in the subsequent round.
The opening set was a tightly contested affair, with neither team gaining a significant advantage until Belgium narrowly clinched it 27-25 after a tense finale. Poland responded fiercely in the second and third sets, showcasing improved blocking and offensive execution to win 25-20 and 25-17, establishing a 2-1 lead.
Belgium staged a spirited comeback in the fourth set, utilizing a series of aces from Elise Van Sas to pull ahead and force a decisive fifth set. However, Poland commenced the final set with strong momentum and maintained their composure, despite a brief surge from the Belgian side. Poland ultimately secured the set 15-10, sealing their advancement to the quarterfinals.
Key offensive contributions for Poland were delivered by Martyna Lukasik, who scored 20 points, and Magda Stysiak, who contributed 15 points to their victory.
