The Women`s World Championship in Bangkok, Thailand, saw the Round of 16 begin with two significant European clashes on August 30: Italy against Germany, and Poland facing Belgium. Both matches delivered intense action as teams vied for a place in the quarterfinals.

Italy Dominates Germany 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-11)
World number one and reigning Olympic champions, Italy, displayed a dominant performance in the Round of 16, sweeping Germany in straight sets to secure their quarterfinal spot. Star opposite Paola Egonu was instrumental, leading all scorers with an impressive 21 points. Her tally included a third of Italy`s 48 attack points, complemented by four decisive blocks and one ace. This victory marked Italy`s 33rd consecutive win in official matches, a remarkable streak stretching back to June 2024, encompassing their Paris 2024 Olympic gold and two successive Volleyball Nations League titles.
Further bolstering Italy`s attack were 21-year-old outside hitter Stella Nervini, who added 11 points including a crucial block, and middle blocker Sarah Fahr, who contributed 10 points (nine in attack and one from the service line). Fahr also boasted an outstanding 82% attack success rate and delivered the match-winning point with a powerful quick attack.
Germany struggled to keep pace across key performance categories, registering 30 successful attacks, five blocks, and no aces. Both teams committed 16 unforced errors. Outside hitter Lina Alsmeier was Germany`s sole player to reach double figures, accumulating 10 points exclusively from attacks.

Poland Edges Out Belgium 3-2 (25-27, 25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 15-10)
Poland secured their quarterfinal berth after a grueling five-set battle against Belgium in the Round of 16, winning 3-2. This hard-fought victory sets up an exciting clash with Italy in the next stage of the tournament.
The match began with a tightly contested first set, which Belgium narrowly won 27-25 after a tense finish. Poland quickly regrouped, showcasing enhanced blocking and offensive prowess to claim the second and third sets convincingly (25-20, 25-17) and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
However, Belgium staged a determined comeback in the fourth set, fueled by a series of aces from Elise Van Sas, ultimately pushing the match to a decisive fifth set. Poland demonstrated resilience, starting the final set strongly and maintaining composure through a brief Belgian resurgence, ultimately closing it out 15-10 to advance.
Martyna Lukasik led Poland`s scoring efforts with an impressive 20 points, supported by Magda Stysiak, who contributed 15 points to their team`s victory.
