For the third time in its history, Italy`s women`s national volleyball team has been crowned champions of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League. Their dominant performance was marked by an undefeated streak, winning all 15 matches and dropping only eight sets en route to securing the prestigious title.

Following the conclusion of the preliminary round in mid-July, eight teams advanced to the final phase of the tournament. Held from July 24th to 27th at the Atlas Arena in Łódź, Poland, Italy entered the finals widely considered as the top contenders.

After a decisive 3-0 victory in the quarter-finals over the United States of America – the first team to win the VNL title three times – reigning champions Italy proceeded to a crucial semi-final match against host nation Poland, who were striving for their first-ever VNL championship.

Despite the strong support from their home crowd and high expectations, Poland quickly discovered that their opponents, the reigning Olympic champions, proved to be an insurmountable force.

Led by Paola Egonu`s 17 points and Alice Degradi`s 13 points, Italy secured a commanding 3-0 victory with set scores of 25-18, 25-16, and 25-14, earning their spot in another FIVB Women`s Volleyball Nations League final.

Italian Women`s Volleyball Team Celebrating Victory

Italy`s formidable opponent in the final was Brazil, who had reached this stage by defeating Germany 3-0 in the quarter-finals and then overcoming Japan in a hard-fought 3-2 semi-final, clinching the deciding set 15-8.

The final promised to be an enthralling contest, and it delivered. Brazil claimed the first set with a 25-22 score, but Italy mounted a resilient comeback, even with Brazil`s Gabi Guimaraes delivering a strong 15-point performance.

Key contributions from Ekaterina Antropova (18 points), Myriam Sylla (16 points), and Paola Egonu (12 points) fueled Italy`s spirited resurgence, once again demonstrating their unmatched strength when performing at their peak.

Italy went on to win the next three sets comfortably with scores of 25-18, 25-22, and 25-22. This victory secured their third FIVB Women`s Volleyball Nations League title, placing them alongside the United States of America as the most successful teams in the tournament`s history.

Italian Women`s Volleyball Players on Court

A remarkable eight players have been part of all three of Italy`s VNL championship teams: setter Alessia Orro, opposite Paola Egonu, outside hitters Myriam Sylla, Alice Degradi, and Loveth Omoruyi, middle blocker Anna Danesi, and liberos Monica De Gennaro and Eleonora Fersino.

Myriam Sylla, a pivotal player for Italy, expressed her joy, stating, “I love this team. We`re incredibly happy and worked cohesively to reach this point. I believe today we truly exemplified the meaning of `team.` If a player is struggling or injured, we have others ready to step up and deliver their best.”

Star player Paola Egonu received her third career MVP award in the VNL, a testament to her consistent excellence.

Meanwhile, Poland secured their third consecutive bronze medal in the competition by defeating Japan 3-1, ensuring a strong European presence on the podium.
