Preview Jaroslav Halak Concludes Illustrious NHL Career After 17 Seasons

Veteran NHL goaltender Jaroslav Halak has officially announced his retirement from professional hockey. The 40-year-old Slovakian netminder concludes a distinguished 17-season career in the National Hockey League.

Although his last professional game was with the New York Rangers in 2023, Halak made an attempt to return during the 2023-2024 season, joining the Carolina Hurricanes on a professional tryout. However, he was subsequently released without playing in a game.

Reflecting on his decision, Halak shared with Slovakia`s Dennik Sport: “Last year I completed summer training… but when nothing came of it, I told myself it was pointless. After that I didn`t even try anymore.” He added, “I`m officially ending my career. I would like to thank my family, friends, fans and especially my wife Petra, who has been by my side my entire career.”

Drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the ninth round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Halak spent four years with the team. His extensive NHL journey also included stints with the St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, before concluding with the New York Rangers.

Throughout his impressive career, Halak participated in 581 NHL games (555 starts), achieving a record of 295 wins, 189 losses, and 69 overtime/shootout losses. He recorded 53 shutouts, maintaining a strong .915 save percentage and a 2.50 goals-against average.

The two-time William M. Jennings Trophy recipient candidly acknowledged, “It`s been two years, and I`ve come to terms with not reaching 300 [wins].” Reflecting positively on his journey, he stated, “Looking back on my career, it`s been a good one. It would have been nicer with 300 wins, but I`ll be happy with 295.”

Beyond his NHL accomplishments, Halak proudly represented Slovakia in the Olympic Games in 2010 and 2014. He also played a key role in Team Europe reaching the championship game at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
