The third annual `Volleyball on Water` event in Ljubljana, themed `Magic Ljubljanica`, delivered an unprecedented program. It featured thrilling matches with athletes from three continents, gourmet food by Michelin-starred chef Luka Košir, and a vibrant entertainment lineup including Pro Dance by Miha Krušič, illusionist Magic Alexander, Acro Connection, and Classy Band.

The unique Volleyball on Water event takes place annually on a floating court on the Ljubljanica River.
Kristina Taja Grünfeld, project manager for the Extrem agency, summarized the two-day spectacle in Ljubljana: “This year`s `Volleyball on Water` tournament was a magical experience, showcasing intense competition among participants from 14 nations. Our aim was to engage visitors` senses with the enchantment of the Ljubljanica. As our national team continues its impressive run in the Volleyball Nations League, this event offered passionate fans a unique yet equally profound way to connect with the sport. Crowds lining the riverbanks and bridges eagerly cheered on the matches, applauded the performances, and savored the gourmet offerings from Grič restaurant.”
The Tournament
The athletes once again delivered the core excitement of the `Volleyball on Water` tournament. Thirty-two players from 14 countries across three continents battled in this one-of-a-kind elimination competition. Its unique appeal lies in the stunning floating and partially submerged court on the Ljubljanica river, which transforms into a spectacular LED-lit arena after sunset.
The final matches were electrifying once more. In the women`s division, fans saw a repeat of last year`s final, but with a new result: the previously unbeaten Nina Lovšin and Tajda Lovšin were overcome by Poland`s Monika Jagla and Malgorzata Vlk. In the men`s final, Czech champion Martin Melmuka, partnered with local favorite Alan Košenina, was unable to retain his title, losing to New Zealand`s McManaway and O’Dea.

Members of the Slovenian men`s volleyball team, including event ambassador Rok Možič, observed the thrilling matches and performances during their Nations League preparations. Možič, who is also launching his own volleyball camp this summer, commented: “This event is an excellent showcase for volleyball. It consistently draws large crowds and offers a truly unique experience. I`m pleased that it takes place every summer on the Ljubljanica and that I can be a part of it. From a competitive standpoint, it`s particularly well-suited for beach volleyball players; movements are slower, but the water makes it more challenging, with less diving compared to beach play. I`d love to try it myself one day, but my national team commitments always coincide with the event. However, it`s clear that both participants and spectators thoroughly enjoy `Volleyball on Water`.”

Excited Americans
This year, `Volleyball on Water` also allowed a few fortunate individuals to experience playing on the unique court. Among them were three Americans who, upon discovering the event via social media, rerouted their European trip from Amsterdam to Ljubljana specifically to attend – and were even given the chance to play! Ariana from Los Angeles enthused: “It`s incredible! My friends were amazed when I showed them the videos. I never thought I`d get to play on this court. It`s an extraordinary concept, and if it came to California, it would be a huge success. While our cities might not have rivers as beautiful as yours, we have oceans and lakes where we could create an equally spectacular event.”
Side Events
The entertainment program saw the return of Miha Krušič’s Pro Dance studio dancers, performing their `River Man` story on the Ljubljanica. The most extensive show program yet also featured Acro Connection, masters of acro yoga, dance, and acrobatics from `Slovenia`s Got Talent`. Slovenia`s renowned illusionist, Magic Alexander (known for appearances on BBC1, Discovery, and Travel Channel), also captivated the audience. Finally, the Classy Band performed beloved Ljubljana classics as part of the `Voice of Ljubljanica` segment.

This annual event takes place in the heart of Ljubljana.
