While indoor volleyball and beach volleyball coaching have distinct aspects, a common thread is the coach`s pivotal contribution to a team`s triumph. To offer enthusiasts a deeper insight into the qualities of a successful coach, this “Secrets of Coaching Success” series features insights from accomplished European coaches across both disciplines, sharing their invaluable expertise.

This installment of the series spotlights Jetmund Berntsen, widely regarded as one of the premier beach volleyball coaches globally. Berntsen oversees the Beachvolley Vikings, including the top-ranked men’s duo, Anders Mol and Christian Sorum, who hold Olympic, World, and four-time European championship titles. Last year, he also guided the Norwegian men’s national team to victory at the Beachvolley Nations Cup in Vienna. This is an excerpt from his comprehensive interview.
This interview is a continuation from a previous discussion.
The Nations Cup Experience
Regarding the recent Nations Cup victory with the Norwegian men`s national team, how would you describe that experience?
“It was, simply put, an extraordinary tournament and event! We found this format incredibly enjoyable and distinctive. The collaboration between Vienna and Hannes Jagerhofer was outstanding, and the organizers truly excelled. We hope this competition becomes an annual fixture. It also provided an excellent opportunity for more teams to compete on a prominent stage, undoubtedly fostering inspiration and motivation.”
The Evolving Role of the Beach Volleyball Coach
With the increasing number of team competitions, such as the Nations Cup, Continental Cup, and national leagues, do you believe this elevates the significance of the beach volleyball coach`s role?
“The proliferation of new competitions is beneficial, provided they maintain a professional standard. More events mean more platforms to showcase our sport and attract more participants. Continuous improvement across all competitions is crucial to enable more players and coaches to pursue this as a viable career. Strong national beach tours, already present in some countries, are also vital for the sport`s expansion. The global circuit remains paramount. If we collectively enhance it, we possess a product with boundless potential for both athletes and coaches.”
Individual Skills vs. Team Interaction
In coaching a beach volleyball pair, do you prioritize enhancing individual player skills or fostering better interaction between them?
“Both aspects are critical, and their relative importance varies with the players` level and age. When forming teams, our initial focus is on their collaborative dynamics. At the elite level of a team sport, the ability to elevate your partner`s performance is paramount. Chemistry is indispensable, given the extensive time spent together, both on and off the court, and the absence of substitutions. It simply must function effectively!”
Unbeknownst Aspects of Coaching
What aspect of beach volleyball coaching do you think the public typically overlooks?
“One surprising fact is that we might even practice alongside our opponents the day before a match! Many people I encounter comment on how fortunate I am to travel globally, enjoying beautiful cities and sunny beaches. What they often don`t realize is that we are away from home and family for about 250 days annually, and our work is constant, even when we`re back. It`s not merely a job; it`s a 24/7 lifestyle. And, contrary to popular belief, it`s not perpetually sunny on the beach! Nevertheless, I have no complaints.”

The Pillars of Coaching Success
To what do you attribute your coaching success thus far?
“My success stems from curiosity, a questioning approach, active player involvement, and a focus on team building. Maintaining an open mind and engaging in daily discussions with players, fellow coaches, parents, and even children has been crucial. For me, coaching just two players would be uninspiring. Building a comprehensive team with multiple athletes, both male and female, supported by a dedicated coaching staff, offers far greater fulfillment. When not working with senior teams, I frequently assist promising young talents at ToppVolley Norge. Indeed, our lives are intrinsically linked to volleyball and beach volleyball.”
Family`s Role in Coaching
Are your family connections with players and staff a factor in your approach?
“When discussing my coaching, I consistently use `we.` Kare and I initiated this project together and have collaborated effectively since its inception, leveraging our combined strengths for both our elite athletes and emerging talents. We also contribute to the girls` program and are part of the beach program at ToppVolley Norway. For us, this isn`t just a profession; it`s a way of life. With so much family involvement, everyone becomes part of it, whether they initially intended to or not. Fortunately, my entire family shares my passion, even my dog Kiara, who demonstrates surprisingly high-level volleyball skills. While my wife occasionally feels it`s a bit much, things have been great so far! We all share a common interest and spend time together as families during training camps and tournaments. My children, Mathias and Frida, are on the team, and Kare has three of his own – Hendrik, Anders, and Markus – with two more, Adrian and Melina, in the youth national teams for both indoor and beach volleyball. And yes, we are still happily married to our wonderful wives, who manage to perfectly balance everything!”
Core Teaching Philosophy
What is the core lesson you aim to impart to your players?
“To win games! Ultimately, sports are about competition and victory, aren`t they? We strive for enjoyment and a relaxed demeanor, while consistently performing our duties. The fundamental principle to instill in all players is the importance of thorough practice, preparation, and maximizing their effort. Beach volleyball is highly situational, so it`s beneficial to teach them rapid situation recognition and optimal problem-solving. While numerous skills require cultivation, the paramount element is high-quality practice. Every ball practice session should incorporate elements of fun, competition, measurable achievements, and insights for the coach.”

Inspiration and Role Models
Do you have a specific coach, from beach volleyball or any other sport, whom you regard as a role model?
“I don`t adhere to specific role models. My focus is on achieving my personal best. I recognize my strengths and constantly seek innovative methods for improvement. I observe successful practices from others, then adapt and enhance them. Coaches across various sports possess valuable insights to share, and I find discussions and evaluations highly beneficial.”
Balancing Work and Life
How do you unwind and recuperate when you`re not working?
“Stepping outside the `beach bubble` is challenging, given the extensive family involvement. However, walking our two large dogs in the woods with my wife Anette is a great way to decompress. Enjoying a good dinner paired with a glass of red wine also helps. Engaging in my own physical activity provides energy; I enjoy interval running or playing my second-favorite sport, badminton. I`ve heard Alexander Horst is quite good at badminton, and I`d certainly relish the chance to compete against him…”
