Patrik Laine's Future with Montreal Canadiens: Trade Expected
Reports from NHL insider Dave Pagnotta suggest that Patrik Laine is highly likely to be traded by the Montreal Canadiens before Friday's trade deadline. Speaking on TSN Radio in Montreal, Pagnotta indicated that the expectation within the league is for the Finnish forward to be moved.
When asked about the percentage chance of Laine being traded, Pagnotta stated, "I was told a pretty decent one, and I was told that the expectation is that he will be moved by Friday’s deadline." He clarified that while expectations are not guarantees, given that "it does take two to tango," the belief and expectation from both sides (Laine's camp and the Canadiens) are that a deal can be successfully executed before the deadline. Pagnotta estimated the probability to be "a little over 50%," emphasizing the need for both the right team match and aligning financial terms.
The Los Angeles Kings were brought up as a potential destination. Pagnotta confirmed that the Kings have had prior conversations regarding Laine. However, their situation has since been complicated by additional injuries, including Andrei Kuzmenko being sidelined for the remainder of the regular season. While the Kings initially sought a more puck-possessing, facilitating forward, their recent roster challenges and coaching changes might prompt a shift in their acquisition strategy.
Despite their current depleted forward group, which saw three rookies make NHL debuts recently, the Kings possess sufficient cap space. Pagnotta mentioned it wouldn't be surprising if they re-engaged in discussions for Laine, though he wasn't certain if those talks had resumed as of the previous evening. With Kevin Fiala and now Kuzmenko injured, the Kings' need for offense makes Laine a logical fit, especially if the Canadiens retain 50% of his $8.7 million AAV, bringing his cap hit down to a more manageable $4 million for Los Angeles.
