The Netherlands national team has secured its place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Women`s Volleyball World Championship, achieving a dramatic 3-2 win against Serbia (27-25, 26-24, 22-25, 20-25, 15-11) in their Round of 16 clash.
This victory held particular significance for the Dutch women, who achieved their best World Championship result in 2018, finishing fourth after a semifinal loss to Serbia. This time, the outcome was different: the Netherlands overcame the reigning champions and advanced further in the tournament held in Thailand.
The first two sets went to the Netherlands. They won both by narrow margins, showcasing composure in critical moments. Nika Daalderop and Dambrink spearheaded the attack, giving the Dutch an early lead.
However, Serbia refused to yield. Playing without their captain, Tijana Bošković, they relied heavily on Uzelac, who delivered an inspired performance. She scored 31 points, keeping Serbia`s hopes alive. After dropping the opening two sets, Serbia turned the match around in the third and fourth, strengthening their block and serving with precision. Suddenly, the score was level, and the defending champions pushed the contest to a decisive fifth set.
The fifth set was a true test of endurance and nerve. Serbia continued to fight fiercely, but the Netherlands possessed enough balance and squad depth to seal the victory. Daalderop finished with 19 points, Dambrink added 17, and combined with solid team defense, they managed to hold on and win 15-11.
“The team displayed incredible resilience and fighting spirit.”

For the Netherlands, this victory is another significant milestone on their journey. From pool winners to quarterfinalists, they remain in contention for what could be their first-ever World Championship medal.
