Preview Oilers Star Connor McDavid ‘Taking My Time’ with Contract Extension Talks

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid, potentially one of the NHL`s most significant free agents next summer, recently addressed the media for the first time since the Oilers` Stanley Cup Final loss in June. Speaking at Canada`s Olympic orientation camp in Calgary, McDavid reiterated his intention to proceed slowly with contract extension discussions.

“As I stated in June, I plan to take my time with this process, and my stance remains unchanged,” McDavid affirmed. “I will meticulously review everything.”

McDavid also confirmed his unwavering commitment to helping the Oilers achieve championship success, despite their recent back-to-back Stanley Cup Final disappointments. “My sole focus is to win in Edmonton, perhaps only secondary to winning a gold medal with Canada. I will navigate this decision deliberately with my family, agent, and all involved parties,” he explained.

Sources close to TSN`s Ryan Rishaug indicate that no formal back-and-back negotiations have occurred yet. McDavid and his agent, Judd Moldaver, are currently exploring options and evaluating potential deal structures.

McDavid is entering the final year of an eight-year, $100 million contract signed in July 2017. With his current annual salary at $12.5 million, it`s widely anticipated that his next contract will position him as the NHL`s highest-paid player, irrespective of where he signs.

During the 2024-25 regular season, McDavid impressively recorded 100 points (26 goals, 74 assists), ranking sixth in the league. He also matched teammate Leon Draisaitl with a team-leading 33 points during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Returning to an Oilers roster that has seen notable offseason changes, McDavid will find new faces. Veteran forwards Evander Kane and Corey Perry have departed, while the team has acquired former Washington Capitals winger Andrew Mangiapane on a two-year deal and secured former Michigan State star Isaac Howard via a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
