Northern Ireland Volleyball extends its profound gratitude to Paul McIlwaine, who, after three decades of dedicated work, is stepping down from his role as Schools Director. Paul, a familiar face to virtually everyone in the Northern Irish volleyball community, has been involved in all aspects of the organization over the years. His commitment has inspired new generations of players and significantly strengthened the network of schools and clubs that form the foundation for the sport`s development.

Reflecting on his contributions, NI Volleyball President Jonathan McFadden stated: “Over the past 30 years, Paul has been more than just a coach, official, and organizer; he has been a driving force behind the growth and advancement of the sport across the country. Paul`s passion for volleyball in Northern Ireland is deeply rooted not only in the game itself but also in the community it builds. Throughout the decades, he has taken on numerous roles – coach, referee, mentor, board member (including President), and friend. Whether on the court or behind the scenes, Paul has given his time, energy, and heart to volleyball with a level of dedication that few can match.”
“His enthusiasm helped shape grassroots programs, inspire young players, and elevate the competitive standards of volleyball in Northern Ireland. He played a crucial role in organizing tournaments, supporting schools and clubs, and ensuring that the sport remained inclusive, accessible, and dynamic for all, and for that, we all thank him. He will be a tremendous loss to Northern Ireland`s schools` commission; during his tenure, the number of competitions grew from one per year to twelve last season, with over 1,000 participants – truly remarkable figures that continue to grow. His steady leadership, calm presence, and tireless advocacy have created lasting impacts that will be felt by many generations of players.”
“Thank you, Paul, for 30 extraordinary years. Volleyball in Northern Ireland is larger, stronger, and more united because of volunteers like you, and we wish you all the best for whatever the future may hold.”
Paul`s departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter, but his legacy will live on in the thousands of young people who discovered their love for volleyball thanks to his guidance, encouragement, and leadership. Paul will not completely disappear from the volleyball courts; he recently obtained his International FIVB Level 2 Coaching Award.
