Espinho`s Praia da Baía is set to host the CEV Beach Volley Nations Cup 2025 Finals from July 17-20, transforming into the hub of European beach volleyball. This prestigious event, featuring elite pairs from eight nations, marks the first time Portugal has welcomed such a high-calibre competition.

As the host nation, Portugal will be represented in the men`s tournament by its leading domestic pairs: the three-time national champions João Pedrosa and Hugo Campos, alongside the vice-champions, brothers Gonçalo and Tomás Sousa. Both duos aim to deliver thrilling performances for the anticipated capacity crowd.
Organized by the Portuguese Volleyball Federation (FPV) in collaboration with the Espinho City Council (CME), the tournament is poised to offer intense and exciting moments.
Vicente Araújo, President of the FPV, emphasized the event`s significance: “The Nations Cup is crucial for our teams, João Pedrosa and Hugo Campos, and the Sousa brothers, as it allows them to earn valuable ranking points. Espinho consistently hosts major international events, and with the city council`s backing, we anticipate a successful competition and a vibrant atmosphere with a large turnout. Espinho is synonymous with volleyball, and we are confident that Praia da Baía will be packed with fans eager to watch the Nations Cup matches.”
National coach Ricardo Rocha confirmed rigorous preparation: “We meticulously planned to ensure peak performance across all competitions. For the Nations Cup, we had extended time for preparation, including with our physical trainer. The ongoing National Circuit stage at Praia da Baía also provides vital preparation on the very sand where we will compete.”

Rocha further highlighted the importance of challenging top teams: “We are aware that Europe`s best pairs will be here, and we are prepared for the challenge. Our athletes possess considerable experience at this level and are familiar with most of their opponents from the world circuit.”
Playing on home soil, the psychological advantage and crowd support will be significant assets. For Espinho native João Pedrosa, the prospect of competing before family and friends evokes unique emotions. “I`m thrilled to play at home. My family and friends rarely get to see us compete live, as most tournaments are abroad. Their presence and support on the court could genuinely make a difference.”
Hugo Campos echoed this optimism, noting a strategic advantage from local training. “Training and competing in this weekend`s National Tour stage at Praia da Baía might give us a slight edge. This could be the decisive factor in crucial moments. While we acknowledge the high level of competition, we are solidifying our standing and are confident we can bring great joy to the Portuguese public.”
For brothers Gonçalo and Tomás Sousa, this marks their second Nations Cup, and they arrive with significantly more experience. Having won the first stage of the National Tour, these young athletes sense their considerable progress. Gonçalo Sousa stated, “Last year, we had only played beach volleyball for three or four months, and this was one of our first international tournaments. Now, with a much broader array of international events under our belt, I believe we`ve reached a strong physical and tactical level. We are fully committed.” Tomás Sousa expressed his gratitude for competing in Espinho, where he began his volleyball journey, and assured their readiness for the challenge. “It`s a privilege to have a tournament of this magnitude at home. We are completely prepared. We know the level will be high, but we intend to make things challenging for the top teams.”
The Challenge of Facing Legends
The tournament is set to be a significant test for the Portuguese duos, as they could encounter legendary figures in beach volleyball. All eyes will be on the formidable Norwegian pair, Anders Mol and Christian Sørum, famously known as the `Beachvolley Vikings`. As Olympic champions from Tokyo 2020, World champions in 2022, and four-time consecutive European titleholders, they are widely considered the top contenders. A match against them would be a formidable challenge for João Pedrosa and Hugo Campos, who are also slated to face them again in Pool A of the CEV EuroBeachVolley 2025 in Düsseldorf.
With elite competitors and the added motivation of playing at home, the Portuguese teams are resolute in demonstrating their prowess. The stage is perfectly set for an unforgettable beach volleyball spectacle at Praia da Baía!
