Espinho`s Praia da Baía is set to host the CEV Beach Volley Nations Cup 2025 Finals from July 17-20, transforming into the hub of European Beach Volleyball. This marks a historic first for Portugal, as it welcomes elite duos from eight nations to vie for the coveted title.

As the host nation, Portugal`s men`s contingent features their leading local talents: the three-time national champions João Pedrosa and Hugo Campos, alongside the runner-up siblings, Gonçalo and Tomás Sousa. Both pairings aim to delight the anticipated capacity crowd.

Co-organized by the Portuguese Volleyball Federation (FPV) and the Espinho City Council (CME), the event is poised to deliver thrilling action.

Vicente Araújo, President of the Portuguese Volleyball Federation (FPV), underscored the significance of the Nations Cup, stating, “It`s a crucial event for our teams, João Pedrosa and Hugo Campos, and the brothers Gonçalo and Tomás Sousa, enabling them to earn points and ascend the world rankings.” He added, “Espinho consistently hosts major international events, and with the continued support of the local council, we are confident in delivering a successful competition and a vibrant atmosphere with strong spectator turnout. Espinho is synonymous with Volleyball, and we expect a large audience at Praia da Baía for the Nations Cup matches.”

National coach Ricardo Rocha affirmed the rigorous preparation, explaining, “We meticulously planned to ensure peak performance across all competitions. For the Nations Cup specifically, we had ample time for comprehensive preparation, including with our physical trainer. Furthermore, the ongoing National Circuit stage at Praia da Baía provides invaluable on-site training for the venue itself.”

Rocha also highlighted the significance of competing against top-tier talent: “We are aware that Europe`s strongest nations will send their premier duos, and we are prepared for this challenge. Our athletes possess considerable experience at this level and are largely familiar with their opponents from the international circuit.”

Competing on home soil, the psychological edge and crowd support are vital advantages. João Pedrosa, a native of Espinho, expressed the unique emotion of playing before his loved ones: “I`m thrilled to compete at home. My family and friends rarely get to see us play live, as most tournaments are abroad. Their presence and encouragement on court could be a game-changer.”

Hugo Campos echoed this optimism, noting a strategic benefit from their local preparation. “Training and competing in this weekend`s National Tour stage at Praia da Baía might give us a slight advantage. This could potentially be the decisive factor in critical moments. We recognize the high level of competition, but we are solidifying our standing within it, and I am confident we can bring more joy to the Portuguese public.”

This marks the second Nations Cup for brothers Gonçalo and Tomás Sousa, who return with significantly more experience. Having won the opening stage of the National Tour, the young players sense their progress. Gonçalo Sousa stated, “Last year, we had only a few months of Beach Volleyball experience, and this competition was among our initial international tournaments. Now, we`ve participated in a much broader array of international events, and I believe we`re achieving a strong physical and tactical level. We`re fully committed.”

Tomás Sousa conveyed his appreciation for competing in Espinho, his hometown and where his sporting journey began, assuring their readiness for the challenge. “It`s a privilege to have a tournament of this scale at home. We are completely prepared. While we anticipate a high level of play, we intend to make it challenging for the top teams.”

Facing Legendary Opponents

The tournament is set to be a formidable trial for the Portuguese duos, who could encounter iconic figures in Beach Volleyball. All eyes are on the formidable Norwegian pair, Anders Mol and Christian Sørum, famously known as the ‘Beachvolley Vikings’. As Olympic champions (Tokyo 2020), World champions (2022), and four-time consecutive European titleholders, they are widely tipped as the leading contenders. A match against them would be a significant challenge for João Pedrosa and Hugo Campos, who are also slated to face them again in Pool A of the CEV EuroBeachVolley 2025 in Düsseldorf.

With elite teams participating and the added motivation of home-court advantage, the Portuguese squads are resolved to demonstrate their capabilities. Praia da Baía is ready for an unforgettable Beach Volleyball spectacle!
