Eleven of the fifteen European teams participating in the 2025 FIVB Men`s Volleyball World Championship have successfully advanced to the knockout phase. This comes despite significant upsets in the preliminary round, which saw major contenders like Olympic champions France and Germany surprisingly eliminated after suffering two losses each.

The 32 participating teams in the 2025 FIVB Men`s Volleyball World Championship, held in the Philippines, were initially divided into eight pools of four teams. The top two teams from each pool then progressed to the next stage of the competition.

Out of the seven pools that included European sides, five were won by European teams. Only three European nations—Türkiye, Bulgaria, and the reigning European champions Poland—managed to secure three victories in the preliminary round.

The most significant surprise of the tournament so far has been the early exit of France. The reigning Olympic champions and fourth-placed team at the CEV EuroVolley 2023 Men were stunned by Finland (2:3) and Argentina (2:3), leading to their 18th-place finish, which ties their worst-ever result in the competition.

In contrast, Finland is on track for its best-ever performance at the World Championship and can solidify this by defeating Belgium in the Round of 16. This particular match is one of three all-European clashes in this phase, guaranteeing three European teams a spot in the quarter-finals.

Belgium has emerged as a major surprise in the competition, winning all three of their preliminary matches and dropping only two sets. Their shocking 3:2 victory over Italy in the group stage has positioned them as a dark horse contender.

“Personally, I hope we can maintain this momentum. The team feels mentally and physically strong, capable of performing under pressure. We will seize our opportunities,” stated Belgium’s Seppe Rotty ahead of their match against Finland.

Another all-European clash features Bulgaria against Portugal. Bulgaria has established itself as a potential medal contender after a flawless preliminary round, where they defeated Germany (3:0), Slovenia (3:2), and Chile (3:0).

Since their last medal in 2006, Bulgaria has experienced a decline, with their best result being seventh place in 2010. However, their recent performances against tough European opposition prove they are capable of competing at a high level.

“It’s incredible to be part of this team. I’m delighted that the players have developed so rapidly to such a high standard. I’m uncertain about our next opponent, but for me, the most crucial aspect is our own game, focusing on our side of the court, and preparing as thoroughly as possible,” commented captain Aleks Grozdanov.

The third all-European encounter pits Türkiye against the Netherlands. Türkiye has been remarkably consistent, losing only one set and securing straight-set victories against Canada and Japan. A win here would mark their best-ever finish in the competition, surpassing their previous record of 11th place set in 2022.

On the other hand, the Netherlands still possesses significant firepower, despite a 1:3 loss to Poland. Their narrow 3:0 victory over Romania (25:23; 26:24; 26:24) showcased their resilience, indicating they can still pose a threat to any opponent.

Poland is favored to win against Canada in their Round of 16 match, as is Czechia against Tunisia. Czechia, despite finishing second in their pool, will be buoyed by their confidence-boosting victory over Serbia.

Serbia, who topped their pool after Czechia defeated China and Brazil was eliminated, will now face the Islamic Republic of Iran. Meanwhile, Slovenia faces a challenging matchup against the United States of America for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Argentina has proven to be a surprising success, winning their group primarily due to their unexpected victory over France. They now face a monumental task against the current title holders, Italy.

Italy, despite their 2:3 loss to Belgium, comfortably swept Ukraine and Algeria. However, they face a formidable challenge against Argentina in a winner-takes-all scenario, where the defending champions could potentially lose their crown.

“We played exceptionally well from the start against Ukraine and maintained our composure during difficult moments. Now, we aim to continue this performance. The teams here are very evenly matched, so we need to play well in every match and be prepared for difficult moments when they inevitably arise,” remarked Italy’s opposite hitter Yuri Romanò for Volleyball World.

The Round of 16 matches at the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship are scheduled to take place between September 20 and 23, with two matches daily in Pasay City.
