The CEV Small Countries Association (SCA) Zonal Tour made a grand return to Scotland, with the host nation showcasing formidable strength on Day 1 in Ayr. Six Scottish teams – three men`s and three women`s pairs – impressively topped their respective groups, securing direct qualification to the quarterfinals and thrilling the local spectators.

Women’s Competition – Trio of Scottish duos impressive
In the women`s competition, Scotland`s top seeds, Lynne Beattie and Mhairi Wallace, set a commanding tone, defeating their Andorran and Maltese rivals in straight sets, never conceding more than 16 points in any set. Their dominant performance earned them first place in Pool A and a direct path to the quarterfinals.
Kathryn Barbour and Alexis Crusey also performed impressively in Pool B, securing two 2-0 victories, notably against fellow Scottish pair Kirsty Hall and Holly Scott. Despite the loss, Hall and Scott advanced to the Round of 12 following an exciting comeback win against Northern Ireland later that day. Meanwhile, Alexandra Clegg-McKeown and Melissa Coutts claimed the automatic quarterfinal berth from Pool C, remaining undefeated after a closely contested three-set triumph over Malta.
Tara Mooney and Grace Allen of Northern Ireland secured their quarterfinal spot by winning the decisive Pool D match against their compatriots. The remaining quarterfinalists will be determined by the winners of the Round of 12 matches on Saturday morning.

Men’s Competition – Home strength across the board
The men`s competition also highlighted Scotland`s formidable presence. Euan Mackenzie Fraser and Ben McHardy displayed superb form, winning all their Pool B matches without dropping a set against both Scottish and Northern Irish opponents. Ewan Ramsay and Cole Turnbull were equally strong in Pool D, achieving two decisive 2-0 victories, including wins over a youthful Icelandic team and a seasoned Northern Irish pair.
James McHardy and Ross McKelvie completed Scotland`s trio of male quarterfinalists by prevailing in a tight match against Wales to win Pool A. Experienced SCA participants, the Ferry brothers (Pascal and Vincent) from Monaco, also demonstrated their expertise by leading their pool. The last four quarterfinal berths will be decided on Saturday morning, following the completion of the remaining pool matches.
