The final day of the SCA Zonal Tour in Ayr mirrored Scotland`s unpredictable weather, bringing sunshine and showers. Yet, the real spectacle was on the court, as the competition culminated in an exhilarating series of six semi-finals and four medal matches, with the host nation, Scotland, securing a near-total dominance on the podium.
Entering the day, Scotland had five teams advancing to the semi-finals across both men`s and women`s categories. However, fierce competition from Monaco, Northern Ireland, and Wales ensured that victory would not come easily.
The women`s semi-finals kicked off the day, featuring an all-Scottish clash between Melissa Coutts/Alexandra Clegg-McKeown (both Commonwealth athletes) and the experienced Beach Pro Tour duo, Alexis Crusey/Kathryn Barbour. This match, observed by Scotland`s Beach Head Coaches Seain Cook and Rachael Gunn, was a thrilling display of fluctuating fortunes, with Barbour/Crusey narrowly clinching victory in a decisive third set after saving a match point in the second. Meanwhile, Scotland`s most seasoned pairing, Lynne Beattie/Mhairi Wallace, efficiently defeated Tara Mooney/Grace Allen from Northern Ireland in straight sets, setting the stage for an all-Scottish women`s final.
In the men`s bracket, Euan Fraser/Ben McHardy were first on court, overcoming a tenacious Welsh team, Conor Robins/Matthew Pollock, in a tight 2-0 victory, bolstered by enthusiastic home support. Joining them in the final were James McHardy/Ross McKelvie, who mounted an impressive comeback from a set down against Monaco`s Ferry brothers, Pascal and Vincent. After a commanding second set, the Scots dominated the decider, securing their win despite a late-game collision, thus ensuring an all-Scottish men`s final featuring both McHardy brothers.
Beyond the spotlight of the finals, classification matches provided other teams an opportunity for strong finishes. Monica Zammit Munro/Jana Kenkovski from Malta defeated Ireland`s Fiona Lamont/Lara McNichols in straight sets, while their compatriots Tamara Kenkovski/Mikaela Galea narrowly beat Scotland`s Samantha Fowler/Charlotte Morgan. In the men’s classification, Andorra`s Lluc Macia de las Heras/Sergi Navas, making their SCA debut, secured a 2-0 win against Ewan Ramsay/Cole Turnbull (SCO), and Iceland`s Emil Mar Diatlovic/Tomas Davidsson marked their debut with a convincing victory over Murray Paterson/Keir Paterson (SCO).
The bronze medal matches saw Clegg-McKeown/Coutts demonstrate remarkable resilience, overcoming their semi-final disappointment to claim Scotland`s first medal of the day. In the men`s bronze match, Monaco`s Ferry brothers displayed impressive consistency, adapting better to the challenging Ayrshire weather (a first-set downpour followed by second-set sunshine) to secure a well-deserved straight-sets victory.
The women`s final saw Beattie/Wallace begin with commanding play, securing the first set comfortably through effective blocking and strategic shot placement. Barbour/Crusey retaliated in the second set with powerful serves and dynamic movement, clinching a close 25-23 finish to force a decider. The third set was a nail-biting exchange of points, but Beattie/Wallace ultimately prevailed, winning 16-14 on their third championship point.
The men`s final faced a brief interruption due to a thunderstorm and lightning, causing a 40-minute delay before warm-ups. Upon resumption, Fraser/McHardy quickly adapted to win the first set. However, McHardy/McKelvie staged a powerful comeback in the second, leveraging their strength and accuracy to equalize. In the decisive third set, McHardy/McKelvie`s experience shone through; they gained an early lead and expertly controlled the game to secure the gold, concluding a triumphant weekend for Scottish Beach Volleyball.
