Imagine beach volleyball as a sophisticated video game: while players are the characters on screen, the coach isn`t merely a gamer but the crucial programmer, meticulously crafting the game`s code beforehand. This analogy highlights the fundamental distinction between indoor and beach volleyball coaching. To shed light on the often-unseen dedication of these mentors, this “Secrets of Coaching Success” series delves into the insights of Europe`s most accomplished beach volleyball coaches, offering a unique glimpse into their methods and the intricate work that drives their athletes to victory.

Following discussions with elite indoor volleyball coaches, we now turn our attention to the beach, featuring Aigars Birzulis, a distinguished Latvian coach. Birzulis notably led Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova to the 2022 CEV European Championship title in Munich, and guided Latvia`s women`s national team to a bronze medal at the inaugural 2022 CEV BeachVolley Nations Cup in Vienna.

Born 58 years ago during Latvia`s Soviet era, Aigars started his athletic career in indoor volleyball, achieving a medal at the USSR Junior Championship. His coaching journey began in the mid-1980s as a coach and sports methodologist, working with numerous indoor volleyball clubs across Latvia. A highlight of his indoor career was leading Incukalns/LU to a national championship title in 2005.

Birzulis also spent years as head coach for Latvia`s junior and youth national teams, achieving an eighth-place finish at the 1997 FIVB Volleyball Men`s U21 World Championship. This experience proved pivotal, laying the groundwork for his transition into beach volleyball coaching.

His foray into beach volleyball began informally, using summer beach training to maintain his indoor players` fitness. However, it formalized in 1996 at the inaugural CEV U20 Beach Volleyball European Championships in Jurmala, where two of his men`s duos excelled: Austris Stalls & Armins Vensbergs secured gold, and Aldis Jaunzeikars & Klavs Zalkalns earned bronze, marking the official start of his successful career on the sand.

His beach volleyball success quickly escalated. From 2003 to 2011, Birzulis`s boys` teams garnered six more continental medals at European Championships in different age categories, including U18 gold for Janis Peda & Toms Smedins in 2003 and U20 gold for Toms Smedins & Janis Smedins in 2005.

In 2008, Aigars Birzulis completed his volleyball coaching degree at the Latvian Academy of Sports Education. Prior to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, he spent three months coaching Latvian Olympians Martins Plavins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs.

Birzulis achieved his first significant senior international coaching success in 2010, guiding Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins to European Championship bronze in Berlin. This was followed by a fourth-place finish at the 2011 FIVB World Championship in Rome and, most notably, an Olympic bronze medal at London 2012. He further cemented his legacy by coaching Martins Plavins and Haralds Regza to a historic gold at the 2015 Baku European Games.

Between 2014 and 2016, Birzulis continued his winning streak with Latvian age-category women`s teams, securing three international medals: U17 World Championship bronze with Tina Graudina & Linda Gramberga in 2014, U18 European Championship gold with Tina Graudina & Paula Neciporuka in 2015, and U22 European Championship gold with Tina Graudina & Anastasija Kravcenoka in 2016.

He coached in Finland from 2017 to 2020, and since 2021, he has been part of an FIVB development project, coaching youth girls` teams in Lithuania.

In August 2022, the Latvian federation appointed him to oversee their women`s teams for two key CEV events. At the inaugural Nations Cup in Vienna, Birzulis skillfully guided the national team – comprising Anastasija Kravcenoka, Anete Namike, Tina Graudina, and Varvara Brailko – to bronze. Subsequently, under his leadership, Anastasija and Tina achieved triumph at EuroBeachVolley in Munich, dominating all six matches and conceding only one set throughout the tournament.

In recognition of his outstanding coaching accomplishments, Aigars Birzulis was honored as a Cavalier of the Order of Three Stars, Latvia`s most prestigious state award for exceptional service.

Since July 2020, Aigars Birzulis has also been coaching at a sports center in Marupe, a town near Riga.

Outside of coaching, Birzulis enjoys relaxing in nature, indulging in fishing, mushroom, and berry picking.
