The small inland town of Malå, located approximately 800 km north of Stockholm, is gearing up to host the COOP SnowVolley Cup. Taking place at the Tjamstan alpine resort, Malå IF is building on last year`s success by organizing the tournament across four courts. The event venue is being enhanced to be more functional and welcoming for spectators, perfect for enjoying the longer days and pleasant winter weather typical of this time of year.

Tournament Expansion and Rules

This year, the tournament has grown significantly and will feature competition in three distinct categories: mixed, senior/corporate/youth, and a mixed snow-level category. Around 20 teams from various parts of northern Sweden are expected to participate. The rules have been specially adapted for the tournament format. Notably, the youth snow-level event for children aged 10-12 draws inspiration from the Swedish Volleyball Federation’s structured game system. In this modified Snow Volleyball version, teams are required to make three touches, with the unique allowance to catch and throw the ball on the second contact.

History and Community Spirit

The initial idea for organizing a Snow Volleyball tournament in Malå was first discussed over four years ago. Although many local players and leaders were enthusiastic, the plans were temporarily halted due to the coronavirus pandemic. The concept was successfully revived last year under the leadership of Johan Grensell, thanks to robust support from local sponsors, the community, the Swedish Volleyball Federation, other sports federations, and the CEV. Malå IF organizes this tournament with the goals of elevating the sport, generating funds for children`s and youth activities, and bringing vitality to the community. Numerous individuals and local organizations are actively involved, with the COOP SnowVolley Cup 2024 being primarily hosted by volunteers from Malå IF in partnership with COOP Malå and the Tjamstan alpine resort.

Looking Ahead

The main objective for this year`s event is to improve upon the successful premiere held in 2023 and to support the further development of the club in the coming years.
