According to Sky Germany's Marlon Irlbacher, 1. FC Köln are exploring the possibility of signing Union Berlin's seasoned defensive midfielder, Rani Khedira. The club is actively searching for a new leader in the defensive midfield position. However, it's important to note that concrete negotiations between the two Bundesliga clubs have not yet commenced.

1. FC Köln are currently in discussions with the 32-year-old player's representatives to assess the feasibility of a transfer. If an initial agreement is reached with the player's camp, 1. FC Köln may then approach Union Berlin.

Earlier in the summer, Khedira was linked with a move to Borussia Mönchengladbach, but that transfer ultimately did not materialize.

Köln Continues Search for Experienced Defensive Midfielder

Rani Khedira aligns with the profile 1. FC Köln has been seeking throughout the summer transfer window. Securing an experienced holding midfielder remains a high priority for the club, especially after the departure of Eric Martel to Mainz 05. 1. FC Köln has already added the Australian international Paul Okon-Engstler from Sydney FC for approximately €1 million.

Okon-Engstler, a 21-year-old who can play as either a defensive or box-to-box midfielder, showcased his talent for Australia at the World Cup. Despite his potential, he arrives as a developmental prospect, representing a significant step up from the A-League to Bundesliga football.

Consequently, 1. FC Köln are still in pursuit of a more experienced midfielder who can provide immediate stability to the team. Their efforts in this regard have met with limited success so far. Wolfsburg rejected 1. FC Köln's approach for Vinicius Souza, who was proposed on a loan with a purchase option. However, the relegated Wolfsburg intends to keep the Brazilian midfielder for their promotion campaign.

Former 1. FC Köln midfielder Ellyes Skhiri was also a consideration before the club decided to pursue other options. West Ham's Edson Álvarez has also been mentioned in connection with a move, although financial considerations make such a transfer challenging.

Rani Khedira Offers the Leadership Köln Seeks

The veteran midfielder's appeal extends beyond his conventional role as a defensive player. Khedira has emerged as one of Union Berlin's most crucial senior figures since his arrival, frequently stepping up to provide leadership in the absence of captain Christopher Trimmel.

Khedira proved his importance during challenging periods last season. Following a particularly disappointing defeat against Heidenheim in April, Khedira publicly took responsibility for Union's performance and acknowledged the frustration of the traveling supporters.

Khedira Still Possesses Significant Sporting Value

The 32-year-old remains capable of directly impacting Bundesliga matches. Khedira was named Player of the Match in Union's 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in February. In that game, he won 78 percent of his ground duels, lost only one of his four aerial challenges, consistently initiated Union's counterattacks, and ultimately earned the penalty that led to the equalizer.

While the newly acquired Okon-Engstler brings youth, potential, and technical ability, Khedira would offer invaluable Bundesliga experience, defensive reliability, and an established presence of leadership.
