Nato a Torino il 19 maggio 1939, Berruti scoprì la sua vocazione per l'atletica nel 1955. Sebbene il suo sogno iniziale fosse il tennis, i suoi eccezionali risultati nelle gare di velocità lo indirizzarono verso l'atletica. Pochi anni dopo, divenne il primo velocista europeo a vincere le Olimpiadi sui 200 metri. Il 3 settembre 1960, nello stesso giorno, Berruti corse la semifinale in 20.5 secondi, eguagliando il record mondiale, e poi trionfò in finale con lo stesso tempo, superando lo statunitense Lester Carney e il francese Abdou Seye. La sua vittoria gli valse un cospicuo premio in denaro e una Fiat 500 in dono.
