Hamburg Joins in Mourning the Loss of English Football Legend Kevin Keegan
Hamburg has released a statement expressing their sorrow over the death of the renowned English footballer, Kevin Keegan. Following the confirmation of the 75-year-old's passing late Monday afternoon, Keegan's former club in the Bundesliga, Hamburger SV, joined the global outpouring of grief for the man affectionately known as "Mighty Mouse." The official announcement on Hamburger SV's website featured a tribute from Keegan's ex-teammate at the club, Horst Hrubesch.
Kevin Keegan's Impactful Stint at Hamburg
Keegan graced the German top flight for three seasons, from 1977 to 1980. Although his initial period in the Bundesliga was marked by challenges, Keegan eventually found his footing and delivered some of his most memorable performances for HSV. He was instrumental in leading Hamburg to a Bundesliga championship in the 1978/79 season.
During his three years with the club, Keegan also secured two Ballon d'Or awards. To this day, he remains the only player in Hamburger SV's history to have been honored twice as France Football's "European Footballer of the Year."
His first season saw an incident during the winter break where he struck a VfB Lübeck player, resulting in an eight-week suspension. In his autobiography, Keegan reflected on this period, vowing to use the time to learn German and earn the respect of his teammates. He ultimately achieved both, along with the admiration of the local fanbase.
Hamburger SV's Statement on Keegan's Passing
"The dynamic forward guided the Rothosen to the German championship in the 1978–79 season and captivated supporters with his spirited and dazzling style of play," the statement read. "With his speed, energy, remarkable aerial ability, and unwavering commitment, he personified the spirit of teamwork like few others."
"For the fans of the Rothosen, he will forever be remembered as one thing above all: a beloved figure," the statement continued. "He was an extraordinary player and one of the greatest footballers to have ever worn the diamond on his chest."
Horst Hrubesch's Tribute to Keegan
"Keegy was the type of player that any team would still want today," Hrubesch was quoted as saying on the HSV website. "He consistently prioritized the team and, with his attitude, motivated everyone around him."
