Hamburg Set to Conclude €7m Fabio Baldé Sale to Strasbourg

Hamburger SV is on the verge of completing a substantial sale of their academy talent, Fabio Baldé. The Bundesliga club is actively restructuring its attacking lineup, which was instrumental in their promotion just over a year ago.

According to reports, Baldé is nearing a permanent transfer to French Ligue 1 club Racing Strasbourg. The 21-year-old winger traveled to France on Wednesday to finalize the remaining details of the deal.

This transfer could bring in over €7 million for Hamburg, with potential additional bonus payments that could further increase the total sum. This represents a significant piece of business for a player who was not projected to be a starter under coach Merlin Polzin for the upcoming season.

Baldé had limited game time in the Bundesliga last season, appearing in only 16 matches, starting three, and contributing one goal and one assist in 440 minutes. He also faced persistent fitness issues, which prevented him from participating in any preseason friendlies this summer.

Baldé and Dompé Exits Signal Rapid Transition at Hamburg

Baldé's impending departure coincides with HSV's decision to move on from another winger closely associated with their return to the Bundesliga, Jean-Luc Dompé. Dompé has been informed that he should look for a new club and was excluded from HSV's training camp squad.

While both players are leaving, the circumstances differ. Baldé, a young academy product, is being sold for a significant fee despite his limited senior role, highlighting his potential. In contrast, Dompé was a key attacking figure during HSV's promotion campaign, leaving after four years, 113 appearances, 18 goals, and 33 assists.

This anticipated shift was foreseen, with analyses suggesting that attacking options from the promotion era would face increased competition upon the club's return to the top flight. The past season has accelerated this transition.

When Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit was injured in January, it was noted that Dompé had struggled with fitness, while Baldé had yet to establish himself consistently at the Bundesliga level. Both now appear set to depart.

Dompé's situation also involves disciplinary factors. The French winger faced a temporary suspension in January following a traffic offense, a matter that led to his removal from first-team activities.

Coach Polzin has confirmed that this incident impacted the player-club relationship, although HSV has officially cited sporting considerations as the primary reason for the decision.

"We had already discussed with him at the end of the season what we didn't like and how we wanted things to change," Polzin stated. "There wasn't one single decisive reason. It's the sum of our desire for change. If it ultimately doesn't fit together, neither he nor we benefit."

The HSV head coach expressed disappointment regarding what he perceived as a lack of reflection from Dompé following the January incident.

"Of course, our relationship with him had also changed after the incidents in January, including his lack of insight towards us and the team," Polzin said. "It's not a good feeling when you defend someone publicly but feel that there's no reciprocation."

Despite this, Polzin acknowledged Dompé's crucial role in the club's return to the top flight.

"We also told him that without him, we wouldn't still be here as coaches," he added. "But without us, he wouldn't have become a Bundesliga player. We both benefited, and ultimately, we both suffered from it."

Dompé remains under contract until 2027, and while no concrete destination has been announced, HSV reportedly expects to find a solution before the transfer window closes.

HSV Continues Attacking Rebuild

The simultaneous departures of Baldé and Dompé are part of a broader offensive restructuring. Ransford Königsdörffer has moved to Mainz, Robert Glatzel has joined Wolfsburg, and Damion Downs has returned to Southampton after his loan spell.

Patson Daka has already arrived and scored in a recent friendly match, but Polzin has indicated that HSV intends to sign another central forward.

"We need players who lead from the front, who can act as target men, who have proven goal-scoring ability, who have pace, and who want balls played in behind," Polzin explained. "At the same time, they need to provide a physical presence in the penalty area."

Alongside Daka, Yussuf Poulsen and youngster Otto Stange are currently options in the forward line. The expected funds from the Baldé sale should provide sporting director Costa with the financial flexibility to continue reshaping the squad.
