Hecking Slams 'Abysmal' Refereeing After Wolfsburg's Leverkusen Collapse

Wolfsburg's challenging season has taken a turn for the worse after their Bundesliga winless streak stretched to an alarming 11 matches following a dramatic 6-3 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday afternoon. Despite an impressive start that saw them take a 3-1 lead against the heavily favored hosts, the German Wolves crumbled, conceding five unanswered goals.

In the aftermath of the match, newly appointed Wolfsburg head coach Dieter Hecking launched a scathing attack on referee Martin Petersen and the Bundesliga VAR team. While initially listing the officiating as the "third reason" for the loss in an interview with Sky Germany, Hecking became more vocal during the post-match press conference, where he passionately articulated his grievances.

“The referee’s performance today simply wasn’t up to Bundesliga standards,” Hecking stated to Sky. He pointed to several key moments: “The penalty [leading to the 1-1 equalizer] stood despite being soft, and he initially allowed play to continue on our penalty [for the 3-1 lead] in the 38th minute.”

Hecking continued, highlighting a crucial unpunished incident: “Then there was an elbow check by Tapsoba, for which he should have received a yellow-red card. Incidentally, that same player then scored the 4-3 goal. Before that 4-3, we also had a Leverkusen player who clearly ran into [Denis] Vavro and rammed him. VAR did not penalize that.”

Reiterating his point about Tapsoba, Hecking emphasized, “A player remained on the field who shouldn’t have been there anymore, with the score at 3-1 in our favor. That’s undeniably one of the key narratives of this game. We firmly believe we were poorly officiated in three or four critical situations today.”

Further detailing his concerns at the post-match press conference, Hecking added, “We had another penalty awarded against us [for the 3-3] in the 53rd minute. Subsequently, there was a corner that perhaps should not have been awarded, and that directly led to their 4-3 goal.”

“Before any questions are asked, I want to address the refereeing,” Hecking preempted. “Far be it from me to suggest that officiating alone was responsible for conceding six goals, but the performance today was absolutely abysmal. We felt unfairly treated today.”

Responding to a follow-up question, Hecking underscored the broader impact: “You have to understand the stakes today and how the refereeing affected the players. As a coach, I must focus on what I can control, and I'll be the first to admit that conceding six goals is unacceptable.”

“Consider how differently the match could have unfolded, especially given Wolfsburg's current predicament,” Hecking urged. “Martin Petersen will undoubtedly officiate a better game next week. Our team showed spirit and was well-positioned to win this match today, but they were undeniably thrown off course.”
