U17 Women's World Championship: Italy Falls to USA in Quarter-finals
The Italian U17 women's volleyball team has been eliminated from medal contention at the World Championship in Santiago, Chile, after a 3-0 defeat to the United States in the quarter-finals. The USA showcased a dominant performance with strong serving and attacks. Key players for the American team, including Ogbodu (12 points), Knotts (14 points), and Masselink (10 points), consistently troubled the Italian defense. The Americans recorded an impressive 12 aces compared to Italy's 1.
In the first set, the USA established an early lead, capitalizing on Italian errors and their own effective serving and attacking. They closed out the set 25-10, with Knotts delivering a series of aces.
The second set saw a more competitive start from Italy, briefly leading 3-1. However, the USA quickly regained control, building an 8-5 lead and extending it to 16-10. Despite Italy's efforts, including strong plays from Uwadie and determined defense, the USA maintained their advantage, winning the set 25-15.
The third set was the most closely contested. The USA initially took a commanding lead, but Italy mounted a significant comeback, narrowing the deficit to 18-19 and then 20-21 with smart play and resilient defense from Bianchin and Terzi. The set went into deuce, with Italy fighting back to level at 24-24. However, crucial plays from Knotts and Masselink sealed the set 26-24 for the USA, securing their place in the semi-finals.
Italy will now face the loser of the match between China and Croatia to determine their final ranking.
