Unions Friedrich: Gladbach forgotten, aiming to be defensive leader again

Marvin Friedrich has returned to Union Berlin, where he feels at home and has big plans after a difficult period at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The 30-year-old professional footballer is looking to reclaim his role as the team's defensive leader.

The familiar surroundings of the Stadion an der Alten Försterei evoke strong memories for Friedrich, recalling his most successful years with Union, including their promotion to the Bundesliga in 2019. He has reportedly signed a contract until the summer of 2028 and is eager to build upon his past achievements.

Friedrich's return comes at a time when Union's defense needs strengthening due to the departures of key players. New coach Mauro Lustrinelli is working on fine-tuning the defensive unit during pre-season training in Austria. Friedrich notes that while the training routines remain similar, the team's composition has changed significantly since his departure in 2022. He recognizes that he is now one of the more experienced players in a team undergoing reorganisation.

On the field, Friedrich aims to direct and guide the defense, as well as mentor younger players. His primary goal is to be the defensive leader and to play regularly, which was not the case in Mönchengladbach. He expressed relief that his contract with Borussia has ended and he is no longer there, indicating a desire to leave the club sooner.

Friedrich's return to Union was made possible because he was a free agent. He had previously expressed his interest in returning to the club should the opportunity arise. His reintegration into the team presents an interesting dynamic, as he will face competition for a starting spot in central defense from players like the established Leopold Querfeld, the talented Stanley N’Soki, and new signing Zeno van den Bosch.
