VfB Stuttgart Finalizes €25m Transfer for Wolfsburg Striker Dzenan Pejcinovic

VfB Stuttgart appears to be on the cusp of signing Wolfsburg forward Dženan Pejčinović, with both German clubs reportedly agreeing on a transfer fee of €25 million. This agreement comes after weeks of intensive negotiations. Wolfsburg's sporting managing director, Dieter Hecking, confirmed that a deal had been struck with another club for the 21-year-old's departure following their recent 0-0 draw.

While Hecking refrained from naming the destination club, reports indicate that Stuttgart has successfully secured their primary attacking target. The transfer is anticipated to be finalized pending the outcome of the striker's medical examination. Pejčinović was notably absent from Wolfsburg's opening 2. Bundesliga match against Kaiserslautern, as the coaching staff opted not to play him with the transfer imminent.

Stuttgart's pursuit of Pejčinović involved a series of offers, with an initial bid of €18 million being rejected by Wolfsburg. VfB then raised their offer to approximately €22 million. Pejčinović had reportedly indicated his preference to join Stuttgart about a month prior, turning down interest from other Bundesliga clubs and international suitors.

Clubs such as Porto had expressed interest, but Pejčinović remained committed to a move to Stuttgart. Factors contributing to his decision included Stuttgart's participation in the Champions League, the opportunity to play under coach Sebastian Hoeneß, and the closer proximity to his hometown of Munich.

Stuttgart eventually presented a third offer, which included nearly €23.5 million in guaranteed payments, with potential bonuses to push the total package beyond €25 million. However, Wolfsburg continued to hold out for a fee around €25 million, with a gap of approximately €1.5 million in guaranteed terms remaining.

The negotiations may have been expedited by late interest from RB Leipzig. Following the unexpected collapse of their €25 million transfer for Hoffenheim striker Fisnik Asllani after a failed medical, Leipzig reportedly turned their attention to Pejčinović. This potential competition from Leipzig may have prompted Stuttgart to finalize their agreement with Wolfsburg. Stuttgart had also begun exploring alternative options in case negotiations for Pejčinović stalled.

One such alternative was Fenerbahçe youngster Sidiki Chérif. Reports suggested that Stuttgart was prepared to pursue other targets if Wolfsburg remained firm on their valuation. Nevertheless, Pejčinović consistently remained Stuttgart's top choice for the No. 9 position. Existing strikers Ermedin Demirović and Deniz Undav had publicly welcomed the potential addition of a high-caliber attacking player, as Stuttgart geared up for the increased demands of Champions League football.

This transfer represents a substantial profit for Wolfsburg, who acquired Pejčinović from Augsburg in the summer of 2022 for a mere €1.25 million. After initially struggling to establish himself in the Bundesliga, a loan spell with Fortuna Düsseldorf in the 2. Bundesliga helped reignite his development.

Upon his return to Wolfsburg, Pejčinović became a key first-team striker, notably scoring a hat-trick against Freiburg and emerging as one of the team's most dependable attacking threats. He concluded Wolfsburg's relegation season with eight goals in 30 Bundesliga appearances, adding three more in cup competitions, bringing his total to 12 goals across all tournaments.

His performances also earned him recognition with Germany's U21 national team, significantly boosting his market value. Wolfsburg's relegation made it challenging to retain him, as Pejčinović expressed a desire to remain in the Bundesliga. Stuttgart, in turn, remained persistent in their pursuit despite initial rejections and competition from other clubs.

After nearly a month of discussions, both VfB Stuttgart and Wolfsburg have achieved their objectives. Pejčinović is poised to continue his Bundesliga career with Stuttgart.
