The Cape Town-based Stormers are enjoying one of their best starts in the championship`s history.
Currently holding second place in the standings, the Stormers have kicked off the season with two compelling victories: a dominant 35-0 win over the formidable Leinster and a solid 26-10 triumph against the Ospreys. Both these impressive wins were forged on the foundation of a robust, almost impenetrable defense. Particularly noteworthy is the clean sheet the Capetonians maintained against Leinster, preventing them from scoring a single point.
Secret Weapon and the Pupil-versus-Mentor Battle
Defensive coach Norman Laker expressed a degree of self-criticism, stating, “We made one or two changes during the off-season that have worked well in matches. Of course, there`s still a long way to go to reach perfection.”
However, the result against Leinster held special significance for him. This is because the Irish club`s defensive strategy is currently led by his old friend and former mentor, Jacques Nienaber, previously the coach of the South African national team. It was Nienaber who laid the groundwork for the Stormers` defensive system during Rassie Erasmus`s tenure (2008-2014), a system that later became the cornerstone of two consecutive Springboks` Rugby World Cup victories.
Laker further elaborated, “I was extremely pleased with how we started the match against Leinster. Jacques and I have always actively exchanged ideas, even when he was with the national team. We know each other`s defensive approaches inside and out. Leinster is a magnificent attacking team, a reigning champion, and one of the top three attacking sides in the league. So, preventing them from scoring any points was especially satisfying.”
A Philosophy of Consistency: “We Won`t Adapt Significantly”
Despite an upcoming challenging European tour, where the Stormers are scheduled to play against Scarlets, Zebre, and Benetton, Laker remains confident in his system: “I don`t want to sound arrogant, but we won`t adapt significantly to our opponents. We might make minor adjustments to certain aspects, but our core approach will remain unchanged. I understand where they might try to put pressure on us, but that`s my challenge to address.”
He also paid tribute to their future adversaries: “Scarlets have an excellent kicking game and refined ball-in-hand actions. Benetton is essentially the Italian national team, with 80% of their squad being international players. During their tour of South Africa, they scored four tries against the Springboks at Loftus Versfeld. All three teams are filled with international players, so don`t expect any easy matches. Nevertheless, we look forward with optimism.”
Reinforcements Are Coming
The Stormers` European tour will coincide with the much-anticipated return of key South African national team players. Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse are expected to rejoin the team in Wales. While Laker has not yet confirmed their inclusion in the starting lineup, their presence will provide a substantial boost in the quest for victory in these tough away matches.
One thing is clear: with their impenetrable defense and unwavering belief in their system, the Stormers are ready to challenge any team in the championship.
