The WEVZA Beach Volleyball U18 Championships recently concluded, showcasing two days of fierce competition at Irene Beach in Bilthoven. Held on July 23rd and 24th, the event brought together fifteen boys` teams and thirteen girls` teams from six Western European nations.

Beyond vying for the U18 Western European Championship title, the tournament also served as a crucial first-round qualifier for the 2025 CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championships, scheduled for September in Italy. This made the WEVZA event a dual opportunity for young athletes: to gain vital international exposure and to fiercely compete for top honors and a spot in the European Championships.
Boys` Tournament Highlights
In the boys` competition, Switzerland`s Livio Friedli and Martin Odermatt dominated, securing the gold medal with an impeccable record of six wins. Their gold medal match was tense, particularly the second set, which observers might have wished extended to a tiebreak. However, the Swiss pair closed it out 22-20, clinching victory. Germany`s Jonathan Bungert and Filo Wüst earned silver, while their compatriots Ben Bockfeld and Luk Hansen claimed the bronze.
Girls` Tournament Highlights
The girls` tournament saw German duo Anna-Chiara Reformat and Rika Dieckmann, pre-tournament favorites, live up to their billing. They swept through the competition undefeated to claim gold, dropping only a single set in their final match against Belgium`s Lente Thant and Simone Vervloet, who consequently took home the silver.
Fifteen-year-old Dutch talents Jara Both and Matilda de Groot delighted the home crowd by securing the bronze medal. Their impressive run led them to the semi-finals, where they were bested by Reformat and Dieckmann. Demonstrating great resolve in the bronze medal playoff, Both and De Groot overcame German pair Annalena Richter and Sandra Otte in a three-set thriller: 17-21, 21-14, 17-15.
As a result of their performances, the boys` teams from Switzerland and Germany, and the girls` teams from Germany and Belgium, have earned direct qualification to the Main Draw of the CEV U18 European Championships, scheduled for September 11-14 in Corigliano Rossano, Italy.
