USA Dominates Canada 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-21)
Team USA secured their quarterfinal spot at the 2025 FIVB Women’s World Championship in Bangkok with a commanding straight-set performance against Canada. This decisive victory sets the stage for a highly anticipated quarterfinal encounter against the victor of the Türkiye vs. Slovenia matchup.
The win was emphatically sealed by substitute opposite Stephanie Samedy with a well-placed block-out kill. The American squad showcased a clear advantage in blocking, recording 11 kill blocks compared to Canada`s 6, and narrowly outscored them in successful attacks, 42 to 38. Canada also struggled with unforced errors, tallying 19 to USA’s more disciplined 12.
Offensively, Avery Skinner and Sarah Franklin were instrumental, each contributing 13 points, with Franklin also adding three critical blocks. Madisen Skinner closely followed with 12 points. Key contributions also came from middle blockers Chiaka Ogbogu (6 spikes, 1 block, 1 ace) and Dana Rettke (1 point, 3 blocks). Defensively, Morgan Hentz excelled, leading all players with an impressive 11 digs.
For the Canadian side, 21-year-old Anna Smrek emerged as the top scorer, delivering 12 points, including an ace and three blocks. Despite the defeat, Smrek expressed a positive outlook, valuing the experience gained from the World Championship and VNL appearances and remaining optimistic about their future performances.
Türkiye Overcomes Slovenia 3-0 (30-28, 25-13, 29-27)
Türkiye, ranked fifth globally, successfully navigated a challenging Round of 16 match against the tournament`s 20th-ranked newcomers, Slovenia. Despite fiercely contested first and third sets, Türkiye showcased their experience and mettle, ultimately prevailing in straight sets.
Standout Performers for Türkiye:
- Melissa Vargas was a pivotal force, leading the team with an impressive 20 points (19 spikes, 1 block).
- Captain Eda Erdem delivered a crucial 17 points, comprising 12 spikes, 2 blocks, and 3 aces, notably scoring the match`s decisive point.
Slovenia`s offensive efforts were spearheaded by outside hitter Fatoumatta Sillah, who recorded 15 points (12 spikes, 2 aces, 1 block), and opposite Evá Zatkovič, who contributed 14 attacks and a block.
