At just 19 years old, Victoria Mboko has already achieved the rank of World #10 and secured a WTA 1000 championship. Her compelling journey suggests the emergence of a future tennis phenomenon. Her dynamic and sophisticated playing style was a highlight at Indian Wells, where her remarkable run concluded only after facing the formidable World #1 and two-time finalist, Aryna Sabalenka.
A Sharp Rise
The past year has been transformative for the Canadian athlete, marked by her inaugural appearance at the BNP Paribas Open. Her meteoric ascent into the top ten makes it easy to overlook that just a year ago, she was competing on the ITF tour, where she claimed her 12th title by defeating Harriet Dart in Porto. Reflecting on her rapid progression, she shared, “It’s genuinely wild to be playing this tournament for the first time and already be ranked in the top ten; it feels somewhat surreal. While there’s naturally some pressure that accompanies this, I’ve also never been in this position before, so I tried to let that perspective guide me.”
Mboko smoothly advanced through her initial two matches against Kimberly Birrell and Anna Kalinskaya, setting the stage for an anticipated showdown with Amanda Anisimova. Facing the former US Open finalist, Mboko delivered a dominant performance, conceding only five games. Despite competing against a prominent figure in tennis within an unfamiliar setting, her composure was evident from the outset. She recounted her mindset: “I thought to myself, ‘Look, I’m playing her for the first time, I’ve never been here, so don’t put any expectations on myself. Just go out there, play my game, and see what unfolds.'”
A Statement Victory
Anisimova, however, began strongly, securing the opening game with a series of impressive winners. For the initial six games, the match was intensely competitive, showcasing powerful groundstrokes, assertive net play, and precise ball placement – truly the makings of a memorable encounter.
Nevertheless, Mboko elevated her game, securing a crucial break in the seventh game of the first set. From that moment, she maintained control, fending off Anisimova’s skilled net play to clinch the first set 6-4.
The second set began with Mboko immediately breaking serve, thanks to a signature powerful return that forced an error. While some games remained closely contested, Mboko consistently performed exceptionally well on key points. Leading 5-1, she secured another break to love, thereby advancing to the quarterfinals where she would face Aryna Sabalenka.
Following her triumph, Mboko reiterated her feelings: “It’s honestly quite surreal to be participating in this tournament for the first time as a top-ten player; it feels a bit unusual for me. While there is undoubtedly pressure that comes with it, I also reminded myself that I’ve never been in this situation, so I allowed that perspective to be part of my approach.” She further elaborated on her strategy, stating, “My thought process was, ‘I’m playing her for the first time, I’ve never been here, so I won’t impose expectations on myself. I’ll just go out, execute my game, and let the outcome unfold naturally.'”
A Step Up
As anticipated, facing Sabalenka represented a significant increase in competition level. The World #1, who had previously defeated Naomi Osaka 6-2, 6-4, appeared determined throughout the tournament to secure her inaugural BNP Paribas Open title.
Despite facing one of the tour’s most powerful strikers, Mboko competed admirably. The critical difference in the match lay in the decisive points. Against Anisimova, Mboko had displayed exceptional consistency and solidity during these pivotal moments. However, against Sabalenka, the Belarusian elevated her controlled aggression, overpowering the 19-year-old, who found herself unable to respond effectively. The conclusive 7-0 tiebreak scoreline starkly illustrates this disparity.
However, developing the capacity to consistently win such crucial points will undoubtedly come with greater experience and increased exposure to the sport’s highest stages. Mboko is clearly still in a developmental phase of her career.
Her next challenge is Miami, and with a substantial number of ranking points available in the upcoming tournaments, she possesses a prime opportunity to further advance her position. While such prospects might introduce heightened expectations and pressure, there’s a strong indication that she possesses the mental fortitude to manage these demands.
Mboko articulated her philosophy: “As I achieve more milestones, I naturally aspire to reach even further. However, I’m also someone who doesn’t typically set rigid goals because I prefer to let things unfold and surprise myself along the way. Whether the outcomes are good or bad, that’s part of everyone’s journey. Honestly, for me, as long as the overall trajectory is upward, regardless of individual good or bad results, that’s what truly matters.”
