Despite significant criticism, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) remains steadfast in its position.

The consultation period for a radical plan, aimed at revitalizing Welsh rugby at both club and international levels, has concluded. The WRU Board is set to convene shortly, with a final decision anticipated later this month.

Opponents of the proposal to halve the number of professional clubs had hoped the union would reconsider its stance. However, the WRU leadership has confirmed that the reduction of two teams is still under consideration, despite public backlash.

WRU Rugby Director Dave Reddin stated that the “optimal system” project was initially presented as a bold and provocative move to highlight key issues facing contemporary Welsh rugby. During discussions, numerous details emerged that require separate consideration.

Reddin reaffirmed that the organization is not abandoning its core idea but is open to discussing alternative options while preparing the final decision.
