Men`s Tournament: Poland Conquers France

Easter Sunday kicked off with the men`s quarterfinals and women`s semifinals. Among the men`s quarterfinal clashes, the most tightly contested match saw Poland overcome Italy 10. After dropping the first set 10-15, the Poles rallied to win 19-17 and 15-13. Other quarterfinal victors included Italy 2, who easily defeated Uruguay, and France, who dispatched Switzerland. In a local derby, Italy 1 advanced past Italy 6.

However, the journey of Italian champions Berger, Burgmann, and Seeber was halted in the semi-final by the formidable Polish squad. Shortly after, Italy 2 (Di Risio, Camozzi, and Geromin) succumbed to a robust French team. The bronze medal match was an all-Italian affair, with Italy 1 triumphing over Italy 2.

In the gold medal final, France initially took a 9-6 lead in the first set. However, Piotr Groszek spearheaded a Polish comeback, eventually securing the set 15-12. The French also established an early 7-4 advantage in the second set, but Poland, demonstrating strong collective performance, once again fought back. A crucial error from France ultimately handed the decisive point and the gold medal to the Poles.

Women`s Tournament: Italy Overcomes Turkey in a Thriller

In the first women`s semi-final, Italian champions Breidenbach, Arcaini, and Dalmazzo comfortably defeated Hungary 2 with scores of 15-8 and 15-9, with both Breidenbach and Dalmazzo contributing 9 points. The Turkish quartet of Yalcin, Celebi, Sencel, and Sahin secured their place in the final by beating the Czech Republic in straight sets. Despite an excellent start by the Czech team, who led 6-3, Turkey`s individual talent and collective strength ultimately prevailed.

The final saw Turkey get off to a strong start, immediately taking a 4-0 lead with Sencel making a significant impact, followed by another run to 13-9. Breidenbach then revitalized Italy with crucial blockouts and aces, but Yalcin managed to clinch the first set for Turkey at 15-12. The second set`s momentum shifted decisively with two powerful aces from Arcaini. Turkey committed too many errors, even after a substitution, and another `poisonous` serve from Sofia secured the set 15-6, leveling the match at 1-1. With their rhythm and solidity restored, and Dalmazzo proving almost unbeatable, Italy then surged ahead to claim the final success, winning the deciding third set to secure the European Tour title 2-1.
