The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has announced plans for a significant reduction in the number of its professional regional teams. As part of reforms aimed at improving the system`s efficiency and sustainability, the WRU intends to retain only two out of the four existing men`s professional teams by the 2027/2028 season, ending equal funding for all current clubs.
The Union has already begun official consultations with the Professional Rugby Board on this matter. Previously, reducing by only one team was considered, but the plans are now more radical.
