From October 15-16, Riga hosted the “Action Volley” Youth Volleyball Coaching Courses. Renowned Dutch coach Remko Kenter led the event, introducing participants to the innovative “Action Volley” and “Smashball” concepts.

Seventy individuals attended, comprising sports school coaches, physical education teachers, and international specialists like Daniele Mario Capriotti (head coach of the Latvian women`s national team) and Fiodor Majarov from Moldova.
The first day covered indoor “Action Volley” principles, while the second focused on understanding “Smashball.” Coaches also explored their roles, including effective observation and interaction with children. Mornings involved theoretical sessions, followed by practical application in the afternoons with young volunteer players from Riga Volleyball School and Inguna Minusa’s Volleyball School. The program concluded with a theoretical exam.

Kenter acknowledged that “Action Volley” and “Smashball” might seem unconventional, representing a new vision for a changing generation of children. He expressed hope that participants would embrace “Action Volley” as volleyball seen through a child`s eyes, emphasizing greater use of the net. He also wished for “Smashball” to be remembered as an inclusive and accessible game that simplifies participation, thereby attracting and engaging more children in volleyball.
Kenter noted the participants` enthusiasm for the innovative ideas, suggesting they could integrate selected elements into their coaching. He highlighted that children enjoyed the fun and challenge, underscoring that joy fosters better learning. Kenter stressed the importance of listening to children and empathizing with their world, considering this connection vital for success.

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of utilizing the net in volleyball and letting children play freely, reminding coaches that children are the true essence of the sport. He urged them to create positive memories, ensuring that children cherish their coaching experiences as they grow.
All participants received a CEV certificate of attendance. The English-language courses were a collaborative effort with the CEV, part of the School Project ‘Play Volleyball – Grow with it’.
