Gilmore Outlines "Aggressive, Yet Smart" Vision for Harlequins' New Coaching Era
Harlequins have officially named Jason Gilmore as their permanent head coach, with former Australia national team coach Robbie Deans set to join as performance director for the upcoming season.
Gilmore, who initially joined the club as defence coach in 2024, has been at the helm on an interim basis for the last six months following Danny Wilson's departure just before the new season commenced.
Gilmore will collaborate closely with the experienced 66-year-old Deans, a former New Zealand full-back. Deans previously served as assistant coach for the All Blacks before making history as the first non-Australian coach of the Wallabies in 2007.
Additionally, the club confirmed that Rob Hunter, formerly a coach with Exeter Chiefs until the end of last season, will assume the position of forwards coach at The Stoop next season.
This new coaching triumvirate faces the challenge of significantly improving Quins' performance, as the team currently sits second from bottom in the Prem, having recently suffered their sixth consecutive defeat against Gloucester.
"There's a significant amount of work ahead, but that's precisely what makes this such an exciting opportunity," Gilmore stated, reflecting on the task ahead.
He emphasized the commitment to "building the correct environment, establishing the right standards, and assembling the ideal squad to propel this club forward."
Gilmore highlighted Deans' arrival as a major positive: "Having Robbie join us is a tremendous asset. His guidance and support, both for me personally and for our entire coaching and playing squad, will be absolutely invaluable."
Addressing the fans, he added: "To our supporters, we truly appreciate the backing we've received during a challenging year. We will need your continued support, as restoring Harlequins to its rightful place demands a collective effort – a mission we are fully committed to."
Harlequins chief executive Laurie Dalrymple confirmed plans to recruit an assistant defence coach to share some of Gilmore's current responsibilities.
